THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2014) – The Maritime men's soccer team played arguably its best game of the season Monday night against an undefeated Coast Guard squad, but the Bears' struck late in the game to claim the come-from-behind 2-1 victory at Reinhart Field. The Privateers fall to 2-4 overall on the season, while USCGA improves to 6-0.

The home squad struck first in the eighth minute when, for the second consecutive game and third time this season, a throw-in by senior Tim Swinehart (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) led to a tally. Swinehart tossed the ball in from about 40 yards out on the left side and it connected with the head of junior Jon Dubowyk (Pennfield, N.Y./Pennfield) before meeting the foot of junior Kevin Ferreira (Centereach, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) in the middle of the box, who directed the ball into the top right corner of the net. It was the junior-transfer's first goal of the season.

Maritime kept the pressure coming early on, but couldn't find the back of the net despite three real good chances within six minutes of each other, the last of which was a shot by Swinehart after his own throw in that Bears' senior keeper Richie Burns had to react quickly to to make the save on the high right side.

Around the 24th minute, the momentum started to swing towards Coast Guard a bit, as they fired off eight of the next nine shots, including the equalizer in the 41st minute by freshman Luke Telang. After a corner kick, the ball bounced around a couple of times before hitting a few Maritime defenders and bouncing to the foot of Telang on the left side of the net. Telang fired the shot into the right side to tie the score at 1-1.

On the play, Privateer junior keeper Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) went down with an apparent injury and was forced to leave the contest. He ended the night with three saves. He was replaced by freshman Corey Cartano (Raleigh, N.C./Sanderson), who played extremely well in his collegiate debut.

Maritime had one more shot before the halftime horn sounded, but junior Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.))'s free kick sailed wide right and the teams went into the break knotted up at 1.

Coast Guard came out strong to start the second half of play, but the Privateers were equal to their task defensively. The Bears outshot Maritime, 11-3 in the half, but didn't manage to get the game-winner until the 77th minute off of a play in which the ball was passed in on the ground from the left side of the field by USCGA's freshman Tyler Furry and found it's way to junior Alex Lane. Lane ripped a shot from the right side of the box off of the left post and in to put the Bears up, 2-1.

Cartano had six saves in the second half. Maritime was unable to record a shot on goal in the closing half. Burns ended the night with one save for Coast Guard.

Maritime returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 20, when the Privateers open Skyline Conference action at Cross-Bronx rival Mount St. Vincent. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Dolphins' all-new Athletic Field at Marillac in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.
