THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Volleyball Team split a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon as the Privateers dropped the opening match to the Brooklyn Bulldogs by a score of 3-1. After the early loss, Maritime came back to upend the King's (Pa.) Lady Monarchs in five sets in the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.

Prior to the first match, the Maritime Athletics Department recognized its two seniors in attendance on the day with Sydney Carella (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) and Christine McCormack (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) playing in their final matches at Riesenberg.

On the day, Carella picked up 41 digs in the two matches to move into sole possession of first place on the single-season digs list at Maritime, passing former teammate Alyssa Pourmonir (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area ), who set the previous record a season ago. For her career, Carella has exactly 700 digs to her credit, which includes her single-season high of 340 in 2014.

McCormack also broke into the top spot in the Maritime Record Books, as she collected 13 assists in the opening match to tie the career mark of 503 assists in a single career at Maritime. In the second match, she went on to break and add to her record as she now sits at 519 for her career heading into Wednesday's playoff opener.

Also on the day, freshman Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) in just one full regular season with the Privateers set the career modern-day kills record as she moved into sole possession of first place with 309 on her career, passing the previous mark set back in 2012.

Freshman Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) added five service aces on the day to continue adding to her single-season total with 72, already a single-year record at Maritime. Close behind is sophomore Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) with 60 on the year, as she sits in second place following her nine aces on the day.

In the opener, the Privateers fell to Brooklyn by a 3-1 score, as the first three sets were all close and down to the wire. In the opening set, Maritime had built up a 19-16 advantage, but the Bulldogs closed out on a 9-2 set to pick up the first set win of the day.

The second set saw Maritime open up with an 8-2 advantage. Brooklyn chipped away at the lead, and pulled within one at 14-13 in the set, but Maritime rallied for five unanswered and went on to a 25-22 victory.

The third set was also a back-and-forth affair, as the Privateers began in a 4-0 deficit, before taking a 5-4 lead, which included kills from both Brady and McCormack. The set was tied on numerous occasions throughout the remainder with Brooklyn picking up the final three points of the set to erase a 23-22 deficit.
Brooklyn controlled much of the play in the fourth set, with a 5-0 lead to start things off. After Maritime had fought back to take a 14-13 lead halfway through the set. Brooklyn ended on an impressive 12-point run to close out the win.

During the second match of the day, the Bulldogs knocked off the Lady Monarchs in straight sets as Brooklyn returned home with a pair of wins in its back pocket.

In the finale, Maritime and King's (Pa.) duked it out in a five-set marathon. The Privateers took the first two sets, but fell in the third by a 30-28 score, and again in the fourth by seven. In the fifth set, the Privateers came back to seal the win with a 15-10 score in the deciding set.

The first set saw Maritime take a 16-15 lead as the lead see-sawed back-and-forth. Through the late stages, Maritime closed out the set on a 9-2 run with Lombardo leading the way with a pair of service aces to go along with kills by Brady and McCormack. The second set played out in a very similar fashion as the Privateers took a 2-0 lead in the match.

Maritime and King's played to a 58-point third set as the set was tied on eight occasions, the marathon was eventually won by the Lady Monarchs with a 30-28 score. King's later tacked on a 25-18 victory in the fourth set to force a fifth.

The deciding set saw Maritime take an early 6-1 lead that saw Maritime get kills from Lombardo and Brady, while Carella put down a service ace. After switching sides with Maritime's eighth point, the Privateers then took a 13-6 advantage. The stingy King's team refused to go down and rallied for four of the next five points, but it wasn't enough as Maritime held on for the 15-10 win in the set to clinch the match.
