THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 9, 2014) – The Maritime men's soccer team hosted Skyline Conference opponent Farmingdale State at Reinhart Field on Thursday night and neither team could find the back of the net in the 110-minute affair, as the game ended in a scoreless tie. The Privateers' record moves to 5-5-1 overall (1-1-1 Skyline), while the Rams move to 4-8-1 (1-2-1 Skyline).
Farmingdale applied the pressure early on, registering the first five shots of the game over the opening 14 minutes before Maritime had a great opportunity in the 15th minute. Junior
Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)) fired a shot from long range that hit square off the middle of the crossbar after Rams' freshman keeper Robert Tucker was caught out of the net after charging an earlier through ball. Farmingdale would go on to outshoot the Privateers' 16-2 in the opening half, as junior goalkeeper
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) was forced to make eight saves to keep the game scoreless into halftime.
In the second half, the Privateers evened out the play a bit, only being outshot by a margin of 8-6. Most of the Rams' chances came early in the half, with the Privateers taking over momentum late. Maritime had four great chances in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but Tucker made three stops and had a defender block another shot to keep the game scoreless.
In the first overtime period, both teams had one great opportunity to get the victory. The first was by Maritime in the 92nd minute when senior
Tim Swinehart (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) had a throw-in deep in the Rams' territory that Chira-Farfan got a head on, but it sailed just high of the crossbar. Later on, in the 99th minute, a header by Farmingdale junior J.T. Famularo went just wide of the right post after a great cross from the left side by senior Tyler Rollman.
The second OT saw Farmingdale regain some momentum, as they went on to outshoot the Privateers, 3-0, but their shots sailed high, wide left and the last was gobbled up by Weber in the 108th minute. Maritime failed to get a scoring chance in the second overtime.
Weber ended the night with 12 saves, matching a season-high that he set back on Sept. 10 at Merchant Marine. He also earned his third shutout of the season. His counterpart Tucker finished the contest with six stops.
Maritime returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 11, when the squad will travel up to Albany, N.Y., to take on Skyline foe The Sage Colleges. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Albany College of Pharmacy Athletic Complex. Live stats are available by
