Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – In their final home regular season matchup on Reinhart Field, the Maritime Men's Soccer senior class stole the show as it accounted for three goals and two assists in the team's 5-1 win over Sarah Lawrence on Tuesday evening.
With the win, Maritime clinched the third seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament, which means the Privateers will host a home playoff contest on Saturday at a time to be determined against either Purchase or Farmingdale. The opponent depends on the outcome of tomorrow's Mount St. Vincent-Purchase contest that will take place on Wednesday.
Prior to the match, the Privateers had an on-field ceremony for the six members of the senior class, who were recognized for their contributions to the program both on and off the field. The seniors recognized were
Nick Mast (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip),
Patrick Kelleher (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy),
Tim Swinehart (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic),
Chris Haffner (West Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg),
Matt Ciruzzi (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and
David Hraska Jr. (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) On the game for the seniors, Haffner had a pair of goals, and Ciruzzi added one, while Swinehart picked up a pair of assists, both via throw-in. Maritime also had contributions from junior
Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)), who picked up his team-leading fifth goal of the season, and also got a goal from sophomore
Michael Wood (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield). Junior
Patrick McCarty (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway) picked up a pair of assists, while classmate
Taylor McFadzen (Northport, N.Y./Northport) also had a helper on the match.
Maritime opened up the game very strong with two shots in the first 85 seconds of the match. Several minutes later, McCarty made his way down right wing and sent a cross into the box that Ciruzzi corralled and sent towards the far post to put Maritime up 1-0. On a very similar play just minutes later, McCarty sent the ball into the box once again to find Haffner, who was able to send the ball to the back of the net to move ahead by a 2-0 score, 23:26 into the game.
Swinehart went to work in the 40th minute as he was rewarded with a throw-in and sent the ball sailing into the box towards Chira-Farfan, the junior then had a quick touch-pass to himself past the defense and scored to move ahead by three.
The game moved to halftime, with junior goalkeeper
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) making way for Kelleher as the senior looked to finish off the match.
After the break, it didn't take Maritime long to score once again as Haffner recorded his second goal of the match just over two minutes into the period. Just minutes later the Privateers scored once again on a Swinehart throw-in, that McFadzen helped get to Wood as the sophomore scored to give Maritime its largest lead of the season at five goals.
Sarah Lawrence got on the board in the 75th minute on a long shot from near midfield that was sent into the goal on a long shot towards the top-right corner of the goal.
Despite the shutout being broken, Maritime finished the game strong with pressure in the offensive zone, resulting in three corner kicks in the final eight minutes.
Earning the win in goal was Weber, who picked up three saves in the opening half. Kelleher did not record a save in the final 45 minutes of regulation. Suffering the loss for the Gryphons, was James Barry, who played the majority of time in goal and made a pair of saves. Nikos Efstratudakis came on for the final 27:11 of the contest and did not record a save.
Final stats saw Maritime outshoot Sarah Lawrence by a 24-5 margin. Corner kicks were also in favor of the Privateers by an 8-0 difference.
Maritime (9-7-1, 5-3-1 Skyline) will await its next opponent in the Skyline Conference quarterfinal round, which will take place on Saturday at a time still to be determined. Sarah Lawrence (2-14, 0-9 Skyline) ends its first season in the Skyline Conference, and will look ahead to 2015.
