Men's Soccer Clinches Playoff Berth Despite Loss to St. Joseph's, 1-0

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the St. Joseph's Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon at the Danzi Athletic Center.
 
With the win, the Privateers clinch a berth in the Skyline Conference Tournament, with seeding still to be determined. Maritime can finish anywhere from 3rd to 5th, meaning Maritime will be playing in the quarterfinal round either at home, or at a site still to be determined based on the outcome of the Privateers' game against Sarah Lawrence on Tuesday, as well as the matchup between Mount St. Vincent and Purchase on Wednesday.
 
In the matchup on Saturday, junior goalkeeper Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) made nine saves in the 10 shots he faced on target as he played all 90 minutes of the match. Sophomore Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)) led the team with five shots, including four shots on goal.
 
The game began with the Golden Eagles registering the first shot of the contest just 20 seconds into regulation that went wide of the target. After a corner kick by St. Joseph's in the 8th minute of play, Alex Guadagno headed up the ball into the corner past Weber to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0.
 
Weber and counterpart Avery Gomez stopped every other shot sent their respective ways through the remainder of the first half. Weber ended the period with five saves, while Gomez stopped one for the Golden Eagles.
 
In the second half, Chira-Farfan took another chance just under six minutes into the period but was denied by Gomez. Maritime continued to have its chances as Chira-Farfan, and junior Taylor McFadzen (Northport, N.Y./Northport) both had their shots on target stopped by the netminder.
 
Senior David Hraska Jr. (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had an opportunity on a shot in the in the 81st minute, but again the Golden Eagle keeper kept his clean sheet in tact. Just minutes later, the Privateers had Gomez beat, however, Chira-Farfan's shot rang off the post.
 
Maritime was unable to muster another offensive chance in the final 7:31 of the game, as St. Joseph's held on for the one-goal victory.
 
At the end of the match, the Privateers had seven shots, while St. Joseph's finished with 16. Corner kicks were also in favor of the Golden Eagles at a 6-1 differential.
 
Maritime (8-7-1, 4-3-1 Skyline) will wrap up the regular season this coming Tuesday, as the Privateers play host to the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons with a 7:30 start on Reinhart Field. Prior to the match, the Privateers will be honoring the members of its senior class in an on-field ceremony.
 
St. Joseph's (8-12, 5-4 Skyline) also clinched a berth into the Skyline Conference season, ending the year with 15 points and will await an opponent, as the final regular season games are played through this Wednesday.
