THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2014) – The Maritime men's soccer team picked up its second straight 1-0 victory over a Skyline opponent, this time against visiting Old Westbury College on Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Field. The Privateers move back over .500 on the season, improving to 7-6-1 (3-2-1 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 7-7 (2-4 Skyline) in defeat.
Junior
Sheick Wattara (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly for Math & Science) recorded his second goal of the season in the sixth minute of action for the lone tally of the afternoon. Maritime earned a throw-in deep in Panther territory on the near sideline and senior
Tim Swinehart (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) was called upon to toss it because of his long throws. As per usual, the throw was long enough to cause a chance in front. The ball bounced off of an Old Westbury defender right in the middle of the box, hit Wattara's back, went off the foot of junior
Jon Dubowyk (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and back to Wattara, who fired it home to the bottom left side.
The Privateers kept the momentum going, firing three more shots before the Panthers recorded another. Old Westbury then went on the offensive, and had a great chance in the 29th minute, but a header by sophomore Adan Cruz-Velasquez off a corner was saved by sprawling junior keeper
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) to keep Maritime ahead. The Privateers had three more shots after 30 minutes had ticked off the clock, including back-to-back chances in the 36th minute by junior
Taylor McFadzen (Northport, N.Y./Northport), which was blocked, and a second by senior
Chris Haffner (West Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg), that sailed high of the crossbar.
A late shot by Old Westbury was blocked and the half ended with the Privateers retaining the 1-0 lead. Weber ended the half with two saves, as did his counterpart for the Panthers, freshman Kelvin Rivera.
In the second half, Old Westbury came out strong, firing off the first seven shots, including one that was the best chance of the game to that point by Cruz-Velasquez, when he charged in on a breakaway and struck the ball just wide of the left post. Shortly after that, the Panthers thought they had tied the game, but a hand ball was called against them in the box before junior Angel Velez lobbed the ball into the top right side of the net. The tally was negated.
Chira-Farfan had a shot in the 80th minute that nearly evaded Rivera and put the Privateers ahead two, however, the rookie keeper dove to keep the ball out after the shot was carried by the wind into the center of the six-yard box.
The Panthers added two more shots late, the first in the 81st minute by sophomore Chris Knox that was saved by Weber and the second in the 83rd minute by Cruz-Velasquez from down low that sailed wide left and high.
Weber earned his fourth shutout of the season shutout (his second straight) after turning away six Old Westbury shots. Rivera ended the day with three saves.
The Privateers hit the road this week and will face Skyline opponent Yeshiva University on Tuesday night, Oct. 21, at 8 p.m. at Tibbets Brook Park in nearby Yonkers, N.Y.
