THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2013) – Time ran out on the Maritime men's soccer team on Tuesday night, as they lost to visiting Berkeley College (N.Y.), 3-2, in the 2013 season opener. Twice in the game the Privateers narrowed the Knights' lead to just one goal, but they were unable to find the equalizer late.
Â
Berkeley owned the early part of the game, rattling off the first eight shots before the Maritime even got off one. Two goals by the Knights' Abdelwahab Mohamed in the first 45 minutes gave Berkeley a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Â
The Privateers seemed to score early in the second half, when junior
David Hraska Jr. (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) headed a ball in off a direct kick, but he was called by the far linesman as being offsides, negating the goal. However, shortly after that, in the 50th minute, Maritime found the back of the net when junior
Tim Swinehart (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic)'s (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) throw in from nearly midfield found the head of sophomore
Taylor McFadzen (Northport, N.Y./Northport) (Northport, N.Y./Northport) in the box, who directed it over the Knights' keeper's hands and into the twine to cut the Berkeley lead to 2-1.
Â
The momentum shifted back in Berkeley's corner just about 14 minutes later, though, when Lehaman was credited with a goal after a direct kick by Mohamed from about 45 yards out caromed errantly off a Maritime defender's foot into the net to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Knights. It was recorded as an own goal.
Â
Maritime struck again, however, with just under 11 minutes remaining in the second half, when freshman
Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) tapped a ball in at the far post after it was sent his way by McFadzen. The whole play started on another throw in by Swinehart. Both McFadzen and Swinehart were credited with assists on the tally.
Â
Despite playing most of the remaining time in Berkeley's end, one more shot by sophomore
Patrick McCarty (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway) (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway) with just six minutes and change remaining was all the Privateers could muster late and Knights' keeper Camilo Montes made the save, his second and final of the night, claiming the victory.
Â
      For the Privateers, sophomore
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) (Northport, N.Y./Northport) suffered the loss in net despite making four saves on the night.
Â
Maritime returns to action this Friday, Sept. 6, when they will travel to face the College of Staten Island. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. on the campus of CSI.
