THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2013) – The Maritime men's soccer team built up an early 2-0 lead in the first half and had to hold on for the victory over conference opponent St. Joseph's Friday night at Reinhart Field. The Privateers improve to a 4-4-2 (1-0-1) on the season, while the Golden Eagles fall to 0-9-1 (0-2 Skyline).
St. Joe's outshot Maritime 23-12 on the night, but strong play by Privateer keeper, sophomore
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) (Northport, N.Y./Northport), kept the game close throughout. He finished the night with six saves.
Maritime broke through in the 12th minute, when a throw-in by junior
Tim Swinehart (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) found its way off the head of freshman
Andrew Barry (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz), bounced towards the goal and freshman
Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) dove to bury the ball in the net with a header. It was his third goal of the season, Barry's first assist and Swinehart's fifth, most of which were by way of throw-ins.
The Privateers doubled their lead in the 21st minute when sophomore
Nick Mast (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) tallied his first goal of the season when he headed the ball into the top right corner of the net off of a corner kick by
Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)) (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)). It was Chria-Farfan's first assist of the year. The Golden Eagles held the shot advantage 12-7 in the opening half, but after the first 45 minutes, it was Maritime that led, 2-0.
In the second half, it was St. Joseph's that struck in the 64th minute when sophomore Gaetano Innamorato charged downfield on the far side and sent the ball across the ground into the middle of the box, where one Eagle player missed it, but it landed on the foot of junior Fabio Alves, who fired it low into the bottom left corner to make the score 2-1.
The Golden Eagles kept pressing, but despite six shots to Maritime's one the rest of the contest, Weber made two saves and the equalizing goal was kept out.
The Privateers will now have over a week off from games and will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a road game up in Newburgh, N.Y. against Skyline foe Mount St. Mary. That game will start at 1 p.m.
