THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2013) – The Maritime men's soccer team defeated visiting Lehman College, 4-2, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Reinhart Field. The Privateers improve to 3-3-1 on the season, while the Lightning fall to 2-5.
Maritime wasted little time getting on the board as sophomore
Taylor McFadzen (Northport, N.Y./Northport) (Northport, N.Y./Northport) headed the ball in off a deep throw in by junior
Tim Swinehart (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic). Shortly after the tally, the Privateers were called for a handball in the 18-yard box and Lehman was awarded a penalty kick. Senior Momar Thiam was picked to take the PK for the Lightning, but he could not convert, as Maritime sophomore goalkeeper
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) (Northport, N.Y./Northport) followed the shot to the lower left corner and made the save.
The Privateers added their second goal in the 24th minute, when another deep throw in by Swinehart found the foot of freshman
Andrew Barry (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz), who scored the first goal of his collegiate career. Thiam did find the back of the net in the 27th minute to cut the Lightning's deficit to 2-1, when he received a pass in the box from Aleh Kazak and fired a shot that deflected in off a Maritime defender.
A Lehman defender caused the Privateers' third goal in the 63rd minute, when he headed the ball back to his goalie but it bounced over the keepers' head for an own goal. In the 77th minute, junior
Chris Haffner (West Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg) (West Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg) scored on a header off of a beautiful cross from the corner by McFadzen to make the score 4-1 in favor of Maritime. Lightning sophomore Brian Amaya scored a late goal in the 82nd minute off a pass from junior Ronniel Mendez, but it was too late as the Privateers held on for the 4-2 victory.
In goal, Weber made four saves in 76:40 of action, allowing just one goal to earn the victory. He was replaced by freshman
Phil Marks (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) for the final 13:40 and Marks made one save to preserve the win.
