Dave Sparozic (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) headed in the game-tying goal as the Maritime men's soccer team drew with the Keystone Giants by a score of 1-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The game started out fairly even for both sides as both the Privateers and the Giants split the 11 shots taken in the period with the home team taking six, to Maritime's five shots. Both teams also had a pair of shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play with both Maritime goalie
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Keystone keeper Zach Schneider registering two saves each.
After halftime, the momentum quickly swung in favor of the Privateers as they picked up the first four shots of the half in just over five minutes of play.
Keystone regained possession and returned to the Maritime defensive third of the field and took a shot that was denied by Weber. After a foul against the Privateers, the Giants took advantage of the restart as Anthony Michlik netted the first goal of the contest after Julio Pertuz, who was credited with the assist, took the free kick.
The teams returned several shots on one another's net, but both Weber and Schneider were up to the task denying one another's offenses, as the score remained 1-0 in favor of the home team.
In the 74th minute, Maritime kicked its offense into a higher gear and put heavy pressure on the Giant defense. Taking four shots and three corner kicks through the remainder of the contest while holding Keystone to nothing offensively.
On the fourth and final shot of the stretch, Sparozic headed the ball into the back of the net after receiving the cross from junior
Matt Ciruzzi (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) to tie the game with just nine seconds remaining.
After the restart, the final nine seconds of the second period ticked off the clock and the Privateers were off to their first overtime contest of the 2013 season.
In the first overtime period, neither side was able to muster a shot until Maritime junior
Nick Mast (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) put a shot on goal that was denied by Schneider with just 90 seconds left in the first 10-minute overtime period.
The fourth and final stanza of the game, saw Mast take yet another attempt at ending the contest but the shot was once again stopped by Schneider just 21 seconds into the period. Keystone's best opportunity to score in the extra session was taken by Shane Steckel, but Weber was up to the task as he picked up the save. The Giants recorded on final shot with just over two minutes remaining, but it sailed wide to keep the game deadlocked, which is where it remained when the final horn sounded.
The final stats saw shots fairly similar at 19-16 in favor of the Privateers, while corner kicks were also in favor of Maritime at a 6-5 clip. Saves were in favor of Schneider, who ended the contest with 10 while Weber made eight saves as the two keepers picked up their first ties of the season on their respective ledgers.
Maritime (2-3-1) will not be in action until Wednesday evening, when the Privateers welcome in Lehman for a 5 p.m. start on Reinhart Field. Keystone (0-5-1) will not return to the pitch until a week from today, when it hosts Berkeley (N.Y.) on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
