THROGGS NECK, NY – Robert Gomez, who led St. Joseph's LI to the 2025 Skyline Conference Championship, has been named Head Coach of the Maritime College men's soccer team. The 2024 Skyline Coach of the Year, he's the Golden Eagles' all-time winningest coach with 34 career victories.
"I am very excited to be given this opportunity to guide this team and program," Gomez said. "After great conversations with the players and staff, I believe that this program has everything in place to be successful. I'm grateful for the trust that the hiring committee has placed in me to lead this team."
Gomez spent three years as head coach at St. Joseph's LI (2023-25), guiding the Golden Eagles to a 34-14-5 record during that span. During his first season, St. Joseph's LI went 8-7-2 overall and reached the Skyline Tournament for the first time in six years. In 2024, the Golden Eagles finished 13-2-2, including a perfect 11-0-0 in conference play. St. Joseph's LI put together a 13-game winning streak and earned its first-ever regional ranking, reaching as high as No. 6 in the region. The Golden Eagles advanced to the Skyline Championship Game for the first time since 2017, falling to Manhattanville.
St. Joseph's LI returned to the Skyline Championship Game in 2025, defeating Mount St. Vincent for its first conference title since 2012. The Golden Eagles went on to face Scranton in the NCAA Tournament. Overall, St. Joseph's LI went 13-5-1 and achieved the program's first-ever national ranking (No. 83).
Eleven Golden Eagles were named all-conference during Gomez's tenure, including 2024 Skyline Defensive Player of the Year Sebastiano Bartolotta. He also developed goalkeeper Guiseppe Vitale, who's now playing professionally in Germany.
Prior to becoming Head Coach, Gomez was an assistant at St. Joseph's LI from 2018-22. He served as the Golden Eagles' recruiting coordinator throughout that time and put together a roster that had the program's first winning season in five years during the 2022 campaign. Gomez also played for St. Joseph's LI from 2012-16, serving as a team captain in his senior year.
He boasts extensive professional and semi-professional playing experience in Slovenia, Germany, Iceland, Costa Rica and Spain. Gomez was a starter for FCA 04 Darmstadt in Germany, where he was a two-time Team of the Week selection in 2019. He began his post-collegiate playing career with FA Euro New York's First Team in 2017-18.
In addition, Gomez has served as an Age Group Leader and Youth Coach with Cantera Futbol USA and Northport Cow Harbor United Soccer Club. He led the 2014 Boys team in LIJSL and EDP competitions, moving from EDP Division 4 EDP Premier 2 while winning multiple tournament titles. Gomez's squad reached as high as No. 6 in the state. He holds a U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) Class D coaching license.
