THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2013) – The Maritime men's soccer team won a thrilling overtime game over Yeshiva University, 5-4, Tuesday night at Reinhart Field. With the victory and Farmingdale State's 1-1 draw at Mount St. Vincent, the Privateers jump into the #4 seed in the Skyline Conference and will now host the #5 seed Rams in the quarterfinals this weekend. Maritime improves to 8-10-2 overall (5-3-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Maccabees fall to 2-12 (1-8 Skyline).
Â
Before the game, Maritime paid tribute to its lone senior, defender
Dave Sparozic (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) with a special Senior Night Ceremony.
Â
Sparozic wasted no time continuing the celebration by scoring his second goal of the season in just the fourth minute of play. It was off a throw-in by junior
Tim Swinehart (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic). Swinehart had four assists on the night and three of them came by way of throw-ins. The Privateers pulled ahead just two minutes later when freshman
Andrew Barry (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) scored off of a corner kick by classmate
Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)) (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)).
Â
Yeshiva responded just 24 seconds later when freshman Itamar Ben David scored the first of his three goals on the night. In the 23rd minute, the Macs struck again, as Daniel Benchimol tied the game at 2-2 on a goal that was assisted by Ben David. Now it was Maritime's turn to answer right away, as 36 seconds later, freshman
Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) scored his first goal of the night off a throw-in by Swinehart, to put the Privateers ahead 3-2. Yeshiva tied it again before the end of the first half when, in the 39th minute, Maritime was called for a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Ben David found the lower left corner to end the scoring on the half.
Â
In the second half, Maritime pulled ahead once again when Swinehart's throw-in found the head of Barry in front of the goal. He headed it along to freshman
Michael Wood (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield) (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield) who just tapped it into the net in the 52nd minute to put the Privateers ahead, 4-3. Maritime was clinging to the one-goal lead, but Yeshiva finally found the equalizer in the 76th minute when Ben David completed the hat trick off a free kick from about 25 yards out. Regulation ended with the teams tied 4-4.
Â
With just 3:14 to play in the first "golden goal" overtime period, Donnelly scored the game-winner when he collected a ball that was headed to him by Chira-Farfan off a free kick by Swinehart.
Â
        In goal, sophomore
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) (Northport, N.Y./Northport) got the start but only lasted until halftime. He was replaced by freshman
Phil Marks (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North), who came in at the beginning of the second half and played great, making two big saves and earning his first collegiate victory.
