PURCHASE, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2013) – The Maritime men's soccer team held on to win a key Skyline Conference matchup today over Purchase College by the score of 1-0. The Privateers improve to 5-8-2 (2-3-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Panthers fall to 7-5-2 (4-2-1 Skyline).
The entire game was fast-paced from the opening whistle. Purchase had the first three shots of the game in the first seven minutes and Maritime sophomore keeper
Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) (Northport, N.Y. / Northport) saved each of them. It was Donnelly's team-leading fourth goal and 10th point of the season. The Privateers responded with a header by freshman
Michael Wood (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield) (Ridgefield Park, N.J. / Ridgefield) in the 9th minute that was saved by the Panthers' sophomore Esteban Aguilar.
Just two minutes later, sophomore
Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) (Mahopac, N.Y. / Mahopac) found the back of the net on a header off a cross by senior
Dave Sparozic (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) (Carmel, N.Y. / Mahopac). Play was about even from that point on, as the total shots for the first half was a narrow 8-7 advantage for Maritime. Weber made two more saves for the Privateers and Aguilar made three more for Purchase.
In the second half, the Panthers outshot Maritime, 3-1 through the first 20 minutes and then applied more pressure late in the game. There were two instances in the closing minute where Purchase had the chance to tie the game, but the first shot by junior Junior Sanguina in the 86th minute was blocked by the Privateer defense and then just under two minutes later a header by senior Michael Beckett was saved by Weber. Maritime was able to retain possession late and hold on for the victory.
The win temporarily moves the Privateers into a tie for sixth place with St. Joseph's in the Skyline Conference standings with positioning becoming important down the stretch of the regular season. The Privateers hold the tie-breaker over the Golden Eagles due to their head-to-head victory, but St. Joe's still has one game in hand over Maritime.
The Privateers return to action on Tuesday night, when they will travel to Jersey City, N.J., to take on the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Caven Point Complex.
