THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 2, 2012) – The Maritime men's soccer team fought from down by one goal to tie its game against Keystone in the second half on Sunday at Reinhart Field, but eventually lost in double overtime by the score of 2-1. The Privateers drop to 1-1-0 on the season in defeat, while the Giants improve to 1-1-0.
Keystone's Adam Kashuba tallied the game's first goal when he rushed up-field to a mishandled ball by Maritime keeper, senior
Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack), and dove to fire the free ball into the gaping net at exactly 12 minutes in. Play started to become a little more physical towards the end of the half, as players from both teams were issued yellow cards. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors going into the halftime break.
Shortly after the whistle to begin the second half, junior
David Sparozic (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) scored Maritime's lone goal of the day on a header off a beautiful pass by sophomore
David Hraska Jr. (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford). The goal tied the game at 1-1 and ignited more physical play. There was another yellow card issued to a Keystone player in the 51st minute before a red card was issued to a Privateer in the 63rd minute and left Maritime down one man for the remainder of the game. Shortly after that, in the 70th minute, another yellow card was issued to a Maritime player.
When tempers finally calmed down, Keystone began to control the play for the remainder of the half, but Vanadia made two great saves in the 74th and 86th minutes to keep the score tied. Senior
Ryan Nugent (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) also fired a shot in on the Keystone keeper Dany O'Rourke in the 86th minute, but the Irishman turned it away. The game would go into “Golden Goal Overtime.”
In the first OT period, the Giants had two good chances, but a shot off a free kick from the top of the box sailed just over the crossbar in the 95th minute and then a shot down low in the 100th minute was blocked away by the Maritime defense.
The game-winning goal came in the second overtime at the 103rd minute, when the Giants' Jake Younie took the ball from the right side to the left across the top of the box and around the defense to be one-on-one with Vanadia. Younie buried the shot into the left side for the win.
There was a total of 34 fouls in the very physical game. O'Rourke finished the game with three saves, while Vanadia turned away two Keystone shots.
The Privateers return to action on Wednesday night, Sept. 5, when they play host to the College of Staten Island. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Reinhart Field, but will begin shortly after the end of the women's soccer game against John Jay.
