Week 10 Preview: Privateers Host Gallaudet On Senior Day Saturday

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2012) – The Maritime football team (3-5, 2-3 ECFC) will return to the field for the first time in two weeks when the squad will play host to conference-rival Gallaudet University (6-3, 4-2 ECFC) on Saturday, Nov. 10, in the final home game of the 2012 season. Kickoff between the Privateers and Bison is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Reinhart Field.

Football Program To Honor 19 Graduating Seniors With Special Pre-Game Ceremony
        The Maritime football team will be holding a very special Senior Day Ceremony prior to kickoff of the game on Saturday to pay tribute the squad's 19 seniors. The ceremony is slated to begin at 12:45 p.m. at midfield of Reinhart Field.

Maritime Football To Recognize Professors And Employees With Faculty/Staff Day
        The football team will be honoring the great professors and employees of SUNY Maritime College with Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day on Saturday. Many important members of the college's faculty and staff who have had deep, long lasting impacts on the members of the football program will be recognized.
 
Privateers Honored Five Times With Conference Player Of The Week Accolades
        The Privateers have had four players earn ECFC weekly honors thus far throughout the 2012 season. Senior linebacker Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) was named the Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions (Sept. 10 and Oct. 8), while sophomore defensive end Nick Coffiey (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) earned the same honor on Oct. 1 and sophomore punter Duke Alvora (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) earned Special Teams Player of the Week accolades on Oct. 8. Then, on Oct. 15, freshman kicker Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) was named the ECFC Rookie of the Week.
 
Privateer Breakdown
        The Maritime football team enters Saturday's contest with a 3-5 record under eighth-year head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes, including a 2-3 mark in ECFC action. The Privateers are coming off two tough losses at home to Husson, 17-14 in overtime on Oct. 27 and on the road at Mount Ida, 24-21, Oct. 20 up in Massachusetts. Prior to that, the team claimed victories over Becker College, 33-7, at home on Oct. 6 and Anna Maria, 42-21, on the road on Oct.13.
 
        Maritime opened the season with a 20-14 home win over rival Mass. Maritime on Sept. 7, but lost the next three games – a 19-14 loss on the road to Kings Point on Sept. 15, a 35-16 defeat up at Castleton St. on Sept. 22 and a 21-14 loss defeat to William Paterson on Sept. 29.
 
        The Privateers have averaged 326.4 yards of offense per game and have scored 25 touchdowns over the eight games. The Maritime defense has given up 296.8 yards per game, 21 touchdowns and four field goals.
 
        The team's rushing leader is junior quarterback Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) with 408 yards on the ground and six rushing touchdowns. Junior fullback Gary Bigham (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles (Fla.)) (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles) is right behind with 382 yards and 12 TDs. Trodden is also 62-for-128 on completions for 896 yards with two TDs and nine interceptions. Trodden's primary receivers have been seniors Erik Heedles (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) and Fritz Jean (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast (Fla.)). Heedles has 22 catches for 223 yards and one touchdown, while Jean has 10 catches for 174 yards. Anthony Patti (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) has hauled in seven catches for 145 yards with one TD and Joe Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) has seven receptions for 124 yards.
 
        On defense, the Privateers are led by senior linebacker Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury), who has a team-high 104 tackles (60 solo and 44 assisted), 8.0 of which have been for combined losses of 28 yards, with three sacks for losses of 22 yards, while also forcing two fumbles. Senior Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and sophomore Hugh O'Brien (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) rank second and third on the team with 57 and 51 tackles, respectively. Both players also have forced one fumble, apiece. Lasher leads the squad with 9.5 tackles for losses of a combined 32 yards.
 
        The punting duties have landed on Alvora this season, who has done a spectacular job. He has amassed 1,129 yards on 29 punts for an average of 38.9 yards per punt. His longest of the year came in Week Two against Kings Point on a 76-yard punt that went back for a touchback. He has four punts of 50 or more yards, has landed 10 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line and had two touchbacks. The kickoffs/field goals have been taken by freshman Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic), who has compiled a total of 1,730 yards on 32 kicks for an average of 54.1 yards per kickoff. He's also 20-for-24 on PATs. Maritime's kickoff return team has compiled 541 yards on 27 returns between Fritz Jean (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast (Fla.)) (14 for 293 total yards, 20.9 ypr), junior Chris Klass (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet ) (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) (nine for 177 total yards, 19.7 ypr) and sophomore Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) (four for 71 total yards, 17.8 ypr).
 
A Closer Look At The National Rankings
        The Privateers rank within the Top 25 among all NCAA DIII programs in three categories: sacks allowed (15th with .75 per game), tackles for losses allowed (25th with 4.38 per game) and third-down conversion defense (25th with 29.57-percent). Individually, Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) ranks third in the nation with 7.50 solo tackles per game and fourth with 13.00 total tackles per game.
 
        Gallaudet is in the Top 25 in the nation in five categories, including being ranked fifth in punt returns with an average of 16.54 yards per return. The Bison are 10th in the nation in tackles for loss (8.67 per game), 12th in sacks (3.33 per game), 13th in rushing offense (268.89 yards per game) and 24th on kickoff yardage defense (allowing just an average of 16.21 yards per return).
 
        Individually, four players are in the Top 25 nationally for Gallaudet. Senior running back Tony Tatum is fourth in the country with an average of 17.74 yards per punt return, while junior defensive lineman Adham Talaat is sixth with an average of .44 forced fumbles per game (four in nine games). Senior defensive lineman Jared Pearce's 1.22 sacks per game ranks eighth, while his 1.72 tackles for loss per game ranks 24th. Lastly, sophomore linebacker Jaris Alleyne's 6.38 solo tackles per game is 22nd in the nation.
 
Inside The Series With Gallaudet
        Maritime and Gallaudet have met five times previously and the Privateers hold the edge in the series, 3-2, having won the last two meetings by the same score, 21-14, in both 2010 and 2011. The teams had alternated wins from 2007 to 2009, with the Bison winning in '07 and '09 and Maritime winning in '08.
 
Last Time The Two Teams Met
        Maritime defeated Gallaudet, 21-14, on the road in the 2011 season-finale. Senior Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) led all players in the game with 179 rushing yards and two scores. Then-junior Fritz Jean (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast (Fla.)) scored Maritime's other touchdown in the fourth quarter, which wound up being the game-winner. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./JFK Catholic) ended the night with 66 rushing yards and 47 passing yards on 3-of-8 completions. On defense, sophomore Church Pfeil had a team-high nine tackles, including two for combined losses of 10 yards.
 
Scouting The Gallaudet Bison
        Gallaudet enters Saturday's game with a 6-3 overall record under third-year head coach Chuck Goldstein, including a 4-2 mark in ECFC action. The Bison are coming off a 29-22 home victory over Mount Ida last weekend. It was their first win over the Mustangs in program history.
 
        The Bison have averaged 369.1 yards of total offense per game and have scored 43 touchdowns and two field goals. They have given up 338.6 yards of offense per game, 27 touchdowns and three field goals.
 
        Freshman quarterback Todd Bonheyo has led the offense with 772 passing yards on 48-for-106 completions with nine touchdowns and six interceptions. He is also the team's rushing leader with 690 yards and 12 touchdowns. His older brother, junior Ryan Bonheyo, is third on the Bison with 442 rushing yards and has scored seven TDs. He has averaged a team-high 10.3 yards per carry. Freshman BJ Flores is second on the team with 448 rushing yards, with three scores. The leading receiver is senior Ryne Worsham, who has hauled in 20 catches for 318 yards and five touchdowns.
 
        On defense, sophomore Jaris Alleyne has a team-high 71 tackles (51 solo and 20 assisted), including 9.0 tackles for combined losses of 39 yards with two sacks, one interceptions, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. Junior Tom Pangia is second on the Bison with 60 total tackles.
