Backed By Anderson’s Hat Trick, Privateers Secure Skyline Tournament Berth With 5-1 Win Over Yeshiva Sunday

        YONKERS, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2012) – The Maritime men's soccer team defeated Skyline-opponent Yeshiva, 5-1, Sunday night at Tibbetts Brook Park. The victory clinched a postseason berth for the Privateers in the Skyline Conference Tournament, which will begin next weekend. Maritime moves to 8-10-1 (4-5 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 1-6 (1-6 Skyline).
 
        Junior David Sparozic (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) tallied the first goal of the game in the sixth minute, when he took the ball in off a turnover and blasted it into the upper 90. Senior Chris Anderson (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) scored the next three goals for the Privateers to give Maritime a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Logan Becker (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and freshman Patrick McCarty (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway) (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway Jr.-Sr.) assisted on his first two goals and then the hat trick goal had a double-assist by Becker and sophomore David Hraska Jr. (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford).
 
        Yeshiva then scored in the 75th minute to cut the lead to 4-1 on a tally by junior Daniel Benchimol, but senior Derek Nehring (Massapequa, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) (Massapequa, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) closed out the scoring in the 81st minute when he sent a shot into the net from 12 yards out off a cross by junior Tim Swinehart (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic).
 
        In goal, freshman Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) (Northport, N.Y./Northport) got the start and made two saves before leaving the game in the 37th minute with an apparent injury. He was replaced by junior John Dunne (Southold, N.Y./Southold) (Southold, N.Y./Southold), who completed the game made four saves. For Yeshiva, senior Nathan Japhet recorded eight saves in the losing effort.
 
        The Privateers are right back in action tomorrow night, when they will play host to non-conference opponent Coast Guard. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Reinhart Field. Just prior to kickoff, the Maritime men's soccer program will honor its five seniors – Anderson, Nehring, Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack), Ryan Nugent (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) and Chris Knowlton (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) – with a very special Senior Day Ceremony.
