THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 10, 2012) - The Maritime men's soccer team lost a close affair to Skyline-opponent Mount St. Mary, 1-0, Wednesday night at Reinhart Field. The Privateers fall to 6-8-1 (2-4 Skyline) in defeat, while the Knights improve to 7-5 (4-1 Skyline).

Mount St. Mary dominated the first half of action, outshooting Maritime, 12-1, but freshman keeper Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) (Northport, N.Y./Northport) was on his toes from the opening whistle. He made five saves in the first 45 minutes of the game. However, late in the half, Mount junior Rob Thompson scored after a direct kick was taken by senior Matt Pagano and sailed over Weber's head and found the foot of Thompson at the left post. He buried the ball in the back of the net to put the Knights up, 1-0, in the 39th minute.

The Privateers came out strong in the second half, firing from all angles early. They actually outshot Mount St. Mary, 7-6, in the final stanza, but Knight junior goalkeeper Matt Darling was able to keep all shots on goal out of the net, ending the night with four saves. Weber finished with eight saves.

Maritime had two chance to tie the game in the second half, the first was in the 53rd minute, when senior Derek Nehrin (Massapequa, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) sent the ball on a direct kick in from midfield that was aided by the wind. The ball bounced about 10 yards in front of the goalie, who was caught in between bounces, and just sailed over the crossbar. The second chance came later in the game, in the 86th minute, when Mount was called for a foul 30 yards out and the Privateers were awarded a direct kick. Senior Chris Anderson (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) and junior David Sparozic (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) lined up behind the ball and tried a little trickery with Anderson running first, but through the ball, and then Sparozic ripped a shot that Darling played perfectly and made the save on.

The Privateers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 13, when they play host to the Skyline-foe Panthers of Old Westbury. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
