THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2011) – Maritime freshman Collin Taylor (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) scored the first goal of his collegiate career Sunday night, and his second, and his third, as he led the Privateers to a dominating 7-1 victory over Medgar Evers in non-conference action. The win improves Maritime's record to 5-2-1 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 0-8.
Taylor's hat trick also came on the night of the first start of his career. He scored his first goal into the low left corner in the 10th minute after a breakaway started by a great lead pass by senior David Kittinger (Fort Myers, Fla./South Fort Myers (Fla.)) (Fort Myers, Fla./South Fort Myers). That made the score 2-0 in favor of the Privateers.
The 6-foot midfielder's second goal was in the 29th minute and gave Maritime a 3-0 lead. It was also a breakaway goal, in which he dribbled through two Medgar Evers defenders and then around the keeper before firing the ball into the empty net. Taylor nabbed the hat trick in the 75th minute when he scored after a through ball down low by classmate David Hraska Jr. (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) to give the Privateers a 6-0 lead.
Junior Ryan Nugent (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Carmel, N.Y. ennedy Catholic) scored two goals for Maritime, both unassisted. Junior Chris Knowlton (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) and freshman Sheick Wattara (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly for Math & Science) (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly for Math & Science) also found the back of the net, while senior Jack Blunden (Arlington, Va./Washington) (Arlington, Va. / Washington) added an assist. Wattara's goal was also the first of his career and ended the scoring in the 90th minute.
Medgar Evers' score came in the 87th minute, when freshman Zeakiel Daley scored off an assist by classmate Borris Pendie to make the score 6-1 in favor of the Privateers.
In goal, sophomore John Dunne (Southold, N.Y./Southold) (Southold, N.Y. / Southold) earned the victory after allowing no goals and making four saves in 68 minutes of action. Dunne was replaced with 21 minutes to play by freshman Patrick Kelleher (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy).
It will be a quick turnaround for the Maritime squad as they will be back in action tomorrow night, Sept. 19, when they play host to John Jay. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
