THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2011) – The Maritime men's soccer team played 110 minutes against the City College of New York on a partly cloudy and at times very sunny Saturday afternoon and ended up with a 1-1 tie at Reinhart Field. The draw moves the Privateers' record to 4-1-1 overall, while the Beavers move to 1-3-1.

CCNY controlled a good part of the first half and got on the board first when a rebound of a shot by junior Jonathan Aguirre hit off Maritime keeper sophomore John Dunne (Southold, N.Y./Southold)'s (Southold, N.Y./Southold) shin and went right to Beaver freshman Clifford Leriche, who shot the ball over Dunne's head from the far side of the 18-yard box. City College outshot the Privateers 7-5 in the first half.

In the second half, Maritime found their groove and started to dominate play. After making a substitution in the 62nd minute to bring freshman Raphael Tavares (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) into the game, just over a minute later Tavares scored after a beautiful diving pass by classmate Oliver Garcia Ortiz (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) found him wide open in front to drill a shot right between the goalkeeper's legs and tie the game at 1-1. The Privateers finished the second half with eight shots to the Beavers four. The game then went to two ten-minute golden goal overtime periods.

In the first overtime, both teams had good opportunities early. Towards the end of the frame, CCNY had two consecutive great chances down low, but one shot resulted in a defensive save by junior Derek Nehring (Massapequa, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) (Massapequa, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) and the other, a header, went just high of the crossbar. City College wound up outshooting Maritime, 3-2.

There was only one shot in the second overtime, registered by the Beavers with 8:46 left on the clock. It was a direct kick from just outside the 18-yard box, but it was blocked by the wall of Maritime. The game would end in a 1-1 tie.

In goal, Dunne stopped six CCNY shots to move to 3-1-1 on the season, while junior Tayfun Kucuk tallied five saves for the Beavers.

Maritime returns to action on Friday, Sept. 16, when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take on Vassar College at 5 p.m.
