THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2010) – The Maritime men's soccer team lost to SUNY Cobleskill, 2-1, in overtime Tuesday night at Reinhart Field. In defeat, the Privateers fall to 3-4 overall on the season, while the Fighting Tigers improve to 2-4.
Freshman James Cole (Northville, N.Y./Northville) (Northville, N.Y./Northville) had the lone goal for Maritime on a header off of a corner kick by junior Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge), who picked up the assist, in the 29th minute. The corner, coming from the left side, bounced off Cole's head then hit the ground in front of the goalkeeper and bounced over his left shoulder into the right corner of the net. It was Cole's fourth goal of the season, which ties him for the team lead.
Maritime took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break and controlled most of the play in the second half, but Cobleskill broke through when Maritime was called for a penalty in the 58th minute. Aaron Gallusser beat sophomore Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack) into the bottom left corner to tie the game at 1-1. Vanadia ended the night with two saves in the losing effort.
The Privateers had many great opportunities to take the lead late in the second hallf, but their shots could not find the back of the net. Regulation came to an end with Maritime outshooting Cobleskill 25-11.
In the first golden-goal overtime, sophomore Haluk Erdogan (Izmir,Turkey/Aliaga Alp Oguz Anadolu Lisesi) (Izmir,Turkey/Aliaga Alp Oguz Anadolu Lisesi) had the first chance to end the game with a shot down low on the left side that was stopped by Tigers' keeper Mack Curran. On the other end of the field, midfielder Brandon Cooper fed the ball in down low way ahead of teammate and forward Souleymane Kone, who caught up to the ball and fired a pass right across the crease to a wide open Tyler Sullivan who buried the game-winner for Cobleskill in the 98th minute.
The Privateers return to action this Thursday, when they open Skyline Conference play when they play host to Farmingdale State (1-7, 0-1 Skyline). Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
