2010 Maritime Privateer Breakdown

The Privateers will look to improve upon the successful 6-4 (3-3 ECFC) season in 2009 when they open up their fifth season against Mass. Maritime on Thursday. The squad returns 16 starters and 35 letter-winners from a year ago.

The Maritime offense will once again turn to its running game, which ranked fourth in the nation with 316.4 rushing yards per game. The Privateers led the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) in seven of 11 offensive statistical categories and the team is returning four All-Conference Offensive selections this year, including senior co-captain Frank Adamo-OL (Katonah, N.Y./Somers).

Maritime will once again turn to the services of junior fullback Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey), who rushed for a team-leading 976 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground. Spanopoulos was named to the 2009 All-ECFC First Team Offense. His one receiving touchdown brought his total to 19 TD's on the year, which set a new program record, while his 11.4 points per game tied for fifth in the nation.

The defense was also solid last year and senior co-captain, 2009 All-ECFC Honorable Mention Steve Roman-SS (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) as well as five other All-Conference players are returning to the gridiron for Maritime in 2010.

This year's defense will be led by sophomore linebacker Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury), who ranked first on the team and third in the ECFC with 7.75 tackles per game. He also led the team with 8.5 tackles for losses of a total of 32 yards. He earned a 2009 All-ECFC Second Team Defense selection and was named ECFC Player of the Week a conference-high three times during the season.

Privateers Picked To Finish Third In ECFC Preseason Coaches Poll

The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference announced on Aug. 25 that the Maritime football team was selected to finish in third place among its conference opponents this season, as voted on by the head coaches of the eight member schools on Tuesday. This was the first official coaches poll performed by the second-year conference, as it is the first season the league will be competing with its full eight members.

The Privateers, who received 45 votes in the poll, finished the 2009 season with a 3-3 mark in conference action, which tied for third place in the league. The squad just missed out on a second-place finish and a berth in the Conference Championship game after a season-ending loss to Gallaudet. Defending ECFC Regular Season Champs and Conference Championship Game winners, Norwich, were selected to finish on top of the conference once again with 53 votes, including seven first place votes. The Cadets were followed by 2009 second-place finisher, Mount Ida, who received 52 votes and one first place tally.

Adamo and Roman Named 2010 Football Co-Captains

On Thursday, Aug. 12, at the first team meeting of the new season, Maritime football head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes and the coaching staff announced the team captains for the upcoming 2010 campaign. Seniors Frank Adamo (Somers, N.Y./Somers) and Steve Roman (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) were chosen by their teammates to lead this year's crop of players that will look to improve upon the successful season in 2009, in which the Privateers finished with a 6-4 overall record.

“I am very proud of these two men and for our team who elected them as their captains,” said Kendrick-Holmes. “They will do an outstanding job of leading this squad both on and off the field.”

2010 Chowder Bowl To Feature Manhattan Clam Chowder Cook-Off

Before and during the game on Thursday, four local Bronx restaurants will be having a “Manhattan Clam Chowder Cook-Off” at Reinhart Field. Be sure to stop by and participate in the event and, especially, enjoy the free samples!

Inside The Series With Mass. Maritime

Thursday's matchup will be the fourth meeting between the two teams, a rivalry that dates back to Aug. 31, 2007, when Maritime came out victorious, 10-6, in the first-ever Chowder Bowl played in Buzzards Bay, Mass. The Privateers also won the next two meetings: 24-14 on Sept. 4, 2008 here in Throggs Neck and 31-14 on Sept. 3, 2009 up at Mass. Maritime.

In last year's victory, then-sophomore fullback Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) rushed for Maritime's first two touchdowns and twin-brothers Anthony Gagliano-QB and John Gagliano-RB (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) hooked up for an 83-yard touchdown pass, which stands as Maritime's longest play from scrimmage in the four-year history of the program. This gave the Privateers an 18-0 lead. The Buccaneers got on the board with a second-quarter touchdown on a 66-yard run by Nathan Sherr and looked to pull within eight points late in the half before Maritime blocked a field goal and senior co-captain Michael Oehl (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown West) returned the loose ball 73 yards for a score and the Privateers went into the locker room with a 25-7 lead. Maritime would score the next touchdown on a 3-yard run by Anthony Gagliano (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) in the third quarter and Mass. Maritime scored the final points of the game late in the final quarter on a 25-yard fumble recovery to make the score 31-14.

Massachusetts Maritime Buccaneers Breakdown

Massachusetts Maritime kicks off its 38th modern-era season on the gridiron on Thursday in the Fourth Annual Chowder Bowl clash between the two regional maritime academies. The Bucaneers welcome back 35 letter-winners and 14 starters to the fold this fall after making positive strides with three victories during the 2009 season, two of which came in record-breaking fashion, while playing in four other contests that were decided by a touchdown or less under sixth-year Head Coach Jeremy Cameron, who was honored by his peers as the 2009 New England Football Conference Bogan Division Coach of the Year.

Nathan Sherr is Massachusetts Maritime's top returning rusher this fall, as he amassed 524 yards and four touchdowns in what amounted to two games and two plays before suffering a season-ending injury at Endicott in Week 3. At the time of his injury, the UConn transfer led Division III nationally with 174.7 yards per game on the ground, including a record-breaking 325-yard effort against MIT.

Junior Cory Antunes has been named as the Buccaneers' starting signal-caller in 2010, while sophomore Jonathan Emond, last year's NEFC Bogan Division Offensive Rookie of the Year, returns as Antunes' primary target after hauling in 38 receptions for 656 yards and seven scores. Junior Mike Bois is the top returning defensive performer for Massachusetts Maritime, as he recorded 75 total tackles, including 47 solo stops, to go with an interception, a sack and a forced fumble.
