THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2010) – After going ahead, 3-0, on a trio of second half goals, the Maritime men's soccer team had to hold off a late Old Westbury rally to claim a 3-2 victory Tuesday night at Reinhart Field. The win improves the Privateers' record to 8-5 overall (4-1 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 8-5 (4-2 Skyline). Maritime now also takes sole possession of first place from Old Westbury in the Skyline Conference midway through the 2010 league campaign.
The game was very evenly matched in the first half, with the Panthers holding a slight 7-6 advantage in shots. Both teams had two shots on goal which were saved. The teams went into halftime scoreless.
In the second half, Maritime got on the board first in the 58th minute when a throw-in deep on the right side by junior Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) hit off a Panther defender's head and was accidently directed into the net for an own goal.
The Privateers struck twice more within the next six minutes, as sophomore Ryan Nugent (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) and junior Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y./Islip) ripped shots into the net to give Maritime a 3-0 lead.
Nugent's shot from the left side of the six-yard box was across the goalmouth and banked in off of the right post. Federico scored shortly after when a shot by Nugent was blocked by an Old Westbury defender but was set up perfectly for Federico to blast it right into the lower left corner from the 18-yard box line.
The Panthers would claw their way back into the game, however, tallying goals in the 75th minute by Hansel Riddock and the 85th minute by Thomas Manz. Both goals came off of crosses from deep down the right side of the field by German Parodis. Despite many opportunities to tie the game in the final five minutes, Old Westbury was not able to find the equalizer and Maritime held on for the victory.
It was a very physical game as the Panthers committed 18 fouls to the Privateers' five. There were three yellow cards issued in the match – two on Old Westbury and one on Maritime.
In goal for the Privateers, senior Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) made his first start in eight games and looked stellar. He recorded two important saves just minutes apart in the first 20 minutes of the game, the first on a very good scoring opportunity down low. Papson finished the night with three saves. With the win, he improves his season record to an even 2-2.
Maritime returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 9, when the squad travels to Annandale-On-Hudson, N.Y. to take on Skyline opponent Bard. Kickoff against the Raptors (4-7, 2-2 Skyline) is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Lorenzo Ferrari Soccer Complex.
