Privateer Football Wins 2009 Chowder Bowl With 31-14 Victory Over Mass. Maritime

    The Privateers of Maritime College defeated the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers, 31-14, Wednesday night at Clear Harbor Stadium to claim its third-straight Chowder Bowl victory. With the win, Maritime opens the 2009 season with a 1-0 record, while the Bucs begin 0-1.

 

Sophomore quarterback Anthony Gagliano (Islip Terrace, NY, St. Anthony's) led the offense with 94 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown to go with 4-for-9 in the air for 109 yards with one pass TD. Sophomore fullback Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, NY, H. Frank Carey)followed suit with 54 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Junior John Gagliano (Islip Terrace, NY, St. Anthony's)led all receivers with 83 yards and a score, while senior Michael Oehl (Nesconset, NY, Smithtown West)returned a field goal block 73 yards for a touchdown.

 

Spanopoulos scored the first two TDs of the game, both on short rushes within the five-yard line. His first touchdown came with 1:31 left in the first quarter after a nine-play, 70-yard drive brought the Privateers to the four-yard line. From there, the sophomore punched it in for the first six. A missed PAT kept the score at 6-0 SUNY Maritime. Then, just 3:07 into the second quarter, Spanopolus ran it in from two yards out and the Privateers took a 12-0 advantage.

 

On the next possession, just two and a half minutes later, Anthony Gagliano (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) connected with his brother John for an 83-yard touchdown pass. After another failed extra point attempt, the score was 18-0.

 

The Bucs scored a touchdown on their next possession on a 66-yard run by Nathan Sherr to cut the deficit to 18-7 at 8:13 of the second quarter.

 

With 1:11 left in the first half and Mass. Maritime pressuring upfield to the Privateer 13, on fourth down, the Bucs set up for a field goal that Oehl blocked and ran back 73 yards for the touchdown to give SUNY Maritime a 25-7 lead into the half.

 

The first score of the second half came on a 3-yard run by Anthony Gagliano (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) on a quarterback keeper to make it 31-7. The Buccaneers added a late TD with 3:15 left in the game on a 25-yard fumble recovery to close out the scoring at 31-14.
