BANGOR, Maine (Sept. 26, 2009) – The Maritime football team lost to Husson, 35-26, Saturday afternoon in its ECFC-opener at the Eagles' Winkin Sports Complex. With the loss the Privateers fall to 2-2 (0-1 ECFC) on the season, while Husson improves to 2-1 (1-0 ECFC).

“The game came down to Husson capitalizing on their opportunities,” said Maritime head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes. “We weren't able to do that today. They are a pretty strong team to stand toe-to-toe against. That is why they are in the poll position in this conference.”

Sophomore Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey)-FB (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) scored three rushing touchdowns for the second-straight game and amassed 115 yards on the ground, while classmate Anthony Gagliano (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's)-QB (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) rushed for 77 yards on the ground and passed for 56 yards after a 3-for-7 performance. It was Anthony's twin brother John Gagliano (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's)-RB (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) that tallied the Privateers' only other touchdown on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Maritime did a good job of holding the Husson offense off the field by having a 38:52-21:08 advantage in time of possessions, but turnovers was what did the Privateers in. The offense committed three fumbles, one of which was brought back for an Eagles' touchdown after a 55-yard recovery. Husson had the slight advantage in total offensive yards, 304-291

The Privateers got on the board first at 9:21 of the opening quarter with a 3-yard run by Spanopoulos that capped off a 10-play, 63-yard drive and a Madison Leady-K/WR (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) PAT conversion put Maritime up 7-0. The Eagles answered back with a little over a minute left in the first with a 1-yard run.

In the second quarter, the Privateers started out with the ball, but a fumble recovery for a touchdown at 12:20 put Husson up 14-7. Spanopoulos added his second TD of the game at 5:14 after a 7-yard run to tie the score at 14-14. Eagles quarterback Jack Hersom hooked up with wide receiver P.J. Dowe for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 42 seconds left in the half to give Husson a 21-14 lead that they brought into halftime.

The Eagles scored first in the second half when Hersom connected with James Dobson for a 40-yard TD pass to extend their lead to 28-14. A 1-yard run by Spanopoulos after an 11-play, 47-yard drive brought the Privateers to within eight, 28-20. Julius Williams would score for Husson at 11:11 of the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run to make the score 35-20 in favor of the Eagles. Junior John Gagliano (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) would round out the scoring on the day with a 6-yard rush with 6:03 remaining in the game.

On defense for the Privateers, senior captain Mike Oehl-LB (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown West) led the team with 8.5 tackles (seven solo and three assisted), while first-year sophomore Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury)-LB (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) registered eight total tackles (seven solo and two assisted). The two also recorded one tackle for losses apiece and Oehl broke up one pass.

The Privateers return to the gridiron on Saturday, October 3, when they play host to the AMCATS of Anna Maria College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
