THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2009) Backup keeper, freshman Mike Vanadia, got the late-season start for this past week's Skyline Player of the Week, junior Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), and the rookie turned aside all five Yeshiva shots on goal to pick up the first win and shutout of his career, as the Maritime men's soccer team downed the Maccabees, 6-0, in the regular season home- and Skyline Conference-finale Thursday night at Reinhart Field.

With the victory, the Privateers improve to 10-5-1 overall and conclude Skyline play with a 4-3-1 mark, while Yeshiva falls to 3-7 (0-6 Skyline). Maritime will now wait to find out its seeding in the 2009 Skyline Conference Championships while other conference opponents finish their regular season league action this weekend. The conference championships will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at campus sites.

Sophomore William Smith (Southold, N.Y./Southold) led the Privateers offense with a goal and two assists in the game, while classmate and reigning Skyline Rookie of the Week Cesur Alagoz (Istanbul, Turkey/Ching Deru) added a goal and an assist.

Freshman Chris Knowlton (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) scored the first goal of the game, and his career, in the 12th minute after he headed in a corner from Alagoz. Smith made it 2-0 when he stole the ball from a Yeshiva defender and blasted a shot in from 10 yards out in the 32nd minute. Freshman Alex Reigner (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) scored his second goal of the season ten minutes later after receiving a high cross from Smith on the right side, giving Maritime a 3-0 lead before halftime.

In the second stanza, sophomore Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) scored his fourth goal of the season, before Alagoz made the score 5-0 in the 68th minute off of a well-struck, long 40 yard direct kick that squeezed between the goalie's hands and the crossbar. Senior David Witzke (Southold, N.Y./Southold) rounded out the scoring for Maritime in his final home game as a Privateer after receiving a pass from Smith fown low and blasting it in for the final score.

The Maritime men's soccer team returns to action on Monday, Oct. 26, when they travel to New London, Conn. to take on the Coast Guard Academy. Kickoff against the Bears is scheduled for 4 p.m.
