THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2009) – After a 3-0 week for the Maritime men's soccer team, junior goalkeeper Harris Papson and first-year sophomore Cesur Alagoz earned Skyline Conference men's soccer weekly honors, as announced on Monday. Papson was named Skyline Player of the Week, while Alagoz earned Rookie of the Week accolades. The Privateers earned victories over John Jay (3-0 at home on Monday, Oct. 12), and conference opponents Old Westbury (3-1 on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 14) and Bard (2-1 at home on Saturday, Oct. 17).
Papson stood tall as the last line of defense for Maritime this week. The junior played through a shoulder injury that forced him out of the John Jay game, but came back even stronger to help the Privateers defeat Old Westbury by recording nine saves in the contest. On Saturday against Bard, Papson made the biggest play of the game, stopping a penalty kick with 10 minutes left that would have tied the score at 2-2. He also made great saves down the line to secure the victory over the Raptors. The Flushing, N.Y., native was previously named to the weekly honor roll earlier this season on Sept. 21.
Alagoz earns his third Rookie of the Week honor of the season, having previously been named it the first two weeks of the fall (Sept. 8 and Sept. 14). The first-year sophomore scored a goal in each game this week to bring his season-total to a team-high eight goals. Alagoz also picked up an assist on sophomore Jason Tursi's game-winning goal against Bard on Saturday, raising his points total to 21, a mark that also leads the Privateers.
The Maritime men's soccer team returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 22, when the squad play host to Yeshiva University in the Privateers' final home game of the season. Kickoff against the Maccabees is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
