THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2009) – Maritime got first-half goals from sophomores Cesur Alagoz and Jason Tursi, then the defense and junior keeper Harris Papson stood tall in the second half, holding off Bard's comeback to claim a 2-1 victory at Reinhart Field on Saturday. With the conference win, the Privateers improve to 9-5-1 overall (3-3-1 Skyline), while the Raptors fall to 5-7-2 (3-3 Skyline).

Alagoz scored the game's first goal in the eighth minute after he took a pass from Tursi and blew by the Bard defender on the left side and blasted the ball into the net from 25 yards out. Tursi gave Maritime a 2-0 advantage in the 33rd minute when his header after a pass from Alagoz got past the charging goalie and bounced slowly into the goal. The Raptors scored right before halftime in the 44th minute after a shot by Chet Darrow hit off the left post and Mario Russo was there to stuff it in to make the score 2-1.

Bard came out strong in the second half, putting up 10 shots in the frame, but could not find the back of the net. This was due in large part to the play of Papson, who came up huge when the Raptors were awarded a penalty kick in the 68th minute when he guessed right and dove to his left to block what would've been the game-tying goal. Just after that play, a free kick was awarded just outside the 18-yard box for Bard and the shot just missed wide right. The Raptors' next big opportunity came on a scramble in front. A Bard forward fired a shot that got passed Papson, but standing in front of the goal to make a great defensive save was freshman Derek Nehring. After more promising opportunities for Bard were denied, time expired and the Privateers escaped with the 2-1 win.

The men's soccer team returns to the field on Thursday, Oct. 22, when the squad play host to Yeshiva University in Maritime's final home game of the season. Kickoff against the Maccabees is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Privateers' Reinhart Field.
