Spring Metropolitan Championship Results
CITY ISLAND, N.Y. – The past weekend the Maritime Men's Rowing team was back in action once again. This time the team was at Glen Island Park in Westchester County hosted by Iona College.

During the competition, Maritime registered two victories at the regatta, with the Privateers picking up a win in the Men's Pair as well as the Men's Lightweight Four. The Men's Varsity Eight finished second in their qualifying run, and advanced to the finals as the octet picked up a silver medal in the finals.

The Varsity Eight started off the day for the Privateers as junior
Declan Albert (Danville, Ken./Canisius (N.Y.)), senior
Albert Merz (Mathews, Va./Mathews), junior
Corey Toscano (Union Vale, N.Y./Our Lady Of Lourdes), junior
Ian Thomsen (Watkinsville, Ga./Oconee County), senior
Wellington Delone (Houston, Texas/Memorial), sophomore
Chris DeMan (Millbrook, N.Y./Millbrook), junior
Michael Kane Jr. (Lewes, Del./Salesianum), junior
Liam Gagliano (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay), with junior
Rachel DeFroda (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) serving as coxswain were aboard. The squad finished with a time of 6:14.10 in the initial heat for a second place finish and advanced to the finals later in the afternoon.

During the finals, Maritime finished with a time of 6:40.10, just eight seconds off the pace of the first-place Stags of Fairfield. Fellow State University of New York school, Geneseo took home the bronze medal.

Up next for Maritime was the men's pair as the Privateers set the pace during the race, the Maritime A boat featured Albert along with Merz taking home gold with a time of 7:24.40, while Maritime's second boat finished second with a time of 7:25.80 with Toscano and Gagliano picking up the silver.

The team had two shells in the water for the Men's Varsity Fours with Toscano, Thomsen, Delone, and DeMan along with DeFroda racing in the initial heat. In a photo finish, the quartet was edged out by Fairfield by just nine-tenths of a second as the Privateers finished with a time of 7:02.50 to Fairfield's 7:01.60.

The second foursome featured sophomore
Quinlan McLoughlin (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla), with junior
Andrew Stockstad (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville), freshman
Alex Miller (Centreville, Va./Westfield) and junior
Benjamin VanPatten (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), as freshman
Christopher Chilelli (Bordentown N.J./Bordentown Regional) served as coxswain. During their heat, the Privateers took second as well with a time of 7:20.50, while Geneseo cruised to a first place victory by 18 seconds.

During the lightweight four race, Maritime had Albert, Merz, Kane Jr., Gagliano and coxswain
Kayla Nolan (Howard Beach, N.Y./Scholars' Academy) continue their strong spring season as they raced to another gold medal. Maritime clocked in with a time of 7:00.10, while Geneseo was close behind with a 7:01.40.

The men's novice four was a new addition to Maritime's lineup, as rookies
Eamon Gekakis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes),
Tyler Reimer (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) and Chilelli teamed up with sophomore
Trevor Belson (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) in the event and finished with another silver medal for the Privateers as they scored a time of 7:55.70, which was just 14 seconds off the pace of gold medal-winner and host Iona.

With the conclusion of the Spring Metropolitan Championships, Maritime will look forward to the New York State Championships this weekend as the Privateers will make their way to Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs on Saturday, April 30.
