THROGGS NECK, NY – As the entire Northeast dealt with heavy rain and high winds during the weekend nor'easter, only one collegiate sailing regatta was able to be completed—the Maritime Fall Open. Benefitting from the campus buildings blocking much of the wind, the Maritime College dinghy sailing team hosted its annual event despite the weather on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 26-27. The Privateers' two entries in the competition ended up taking fifth and seventh overall.
Maritime fielded two full teams, a total of four boats. The Privateers utilized mostly their younger sailors, with nine freshmen competing (including six who were making their debut). "Maritime 1" tallied 173 points to finish tied for fourth place. However, Merchant Marine owned the tiebreaker, so the Privateers were officially placed fifth. "Maritime 2," meanwhile, posted a score of 213 points, which was good for seventh overall.
Victor Schlecker (Elkton, MD) skipped the "A" boat for "Maritime 1" throughout the regatta. He was joined by
Jack Allen (Satellite Beach, FL) for the first eight races and
Riley Gross (Fairfield, CT) in the final two. The "B" crew for "Maritime 1" consisted of
Brian Lynch (Mattituck, NY) and
Madeline Ammatuna (Coventry, RI). They won the eighth of 10 total races.
Four different tandems sailed in the "A" boat for "Maritime 2."
Marcus Kozlowski (Baltimore, MD) and
Colin Jee (Cary, NC) were together for Races 1-6, with
Desmond White (Aguada, Puerto Rico) joining Jee in the seventh and eighth races. Kozlowski and
Brenden Campise (Port Ewen, NY) completed the regatta for "Maritime 2."
In the "B" boat for "Maritime 2,"
RJ Calanese (Huntington, NY) and
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY) contested the first two races before
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) teamed with Calanese in Races 3 & 4. The duo earned a second-place finish in Race 4. Lunati was then paired with Saharov for the remainder of the event, and they had a second-place showing in Race 7.
The offshore squad was also scheduled to open its Fall season at the American Yacht Club Fall Invitational. However, that event was cancelled due to the storm. The team will now start its campaign at the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta on Oct. 10-11.
This weekend, the dinghy sailors head to Fordham for the Jesuit Invitational. Another group of Privateers will compete at the Moody Trophy, hosted by the University of Rhode Island. The women's team, meanwhile, travels to Princeton for the Tiger Women's Open.
