PRINCETON, NJ – After starting the regatta in fourth place, the Maritime College women's sailing team rallied to win each of the last two races and clinch the overall victory at the Tiger Women's Open, which was hosted by Princeton University on Saturday. The Privateers took first in both the "A" and "B" divisions and finished with 21 points overall, four ahead of second-place American.
Maritime recovered from its slow start, gradually moving up the standings throughout the six-race series. Heading into the sixth and final rotation, the Privateers trailed American by two points. However,
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) and
Sara Altman (Airmont, NY) earned their fourth straight first-place finish in the "B" boat while the Eagles placed third, leveling the overall score with just the last "A" division race remaining.
Nikita Troast (Brooklyn, NY) and
Riley Gross (Fairfield, CT) then clinched the overall victory by taking first in their final race.
The Tiger Women's Open was one of three events in which Maritime competed over the weekend. The coed dinghy squad was in action at both the Jesuit Invitational, hosted by Fordham, and the Moody Trophy, hosted by the University of Rhode Island. Special thanks to Pete Snyder from the Waterfront for transporting the team to Fordham and to the Ammatuna family, who graciously housed the contingent that traveled to Rhode Island.
At the Jesuit Invitational, the Privateers placed 12
th out of 17 teams with 324 total points. Across the 14-race series, Maritime's best result was third in Race 7 by the "A" crew of
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and
RJ Calanese (Huntington, NY). In the "B" boat,
Joseph Herrick (Bay Shore, NY) and
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY) had a best showing of sixth place in Race 8.
There were also 17 teams entered in the Moody Trophy, and the Privateers ended up 14
th overall with 264 points. In the "A" division,
Adam Starck (Lakewood, OH) and
Amelia Tebbens (Center Moriches, NY) won Race 2 and added a third-place finish in the seventh of 12 races.
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) and
Nicholas Cunha (Red Bank, NJ) sailed together as the "B" crew for the first 10 races before
Brian Lynch (Mattituck, NY) and
Madeline Ammatuna (Coventry, RI) concluded the regatta in the boat.
This weekend, the team will again split up across multiple events. The Privateers will return to Princeton for the Princeton Fall Open, an open dinghy regatta, while also sending a group to the Hewitt Trophy, hosted by Bowdoin. In addition, the offshore team will kick off its campaign at the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, which is being held at the Larchmont Yacht Club. Maritime's offshore squad was originally set to begin the season at the American Yacht Club Fall Invitational on Sept. 26-27, but that event was cancelled because of weather.
