Results: Stony Brook Fall Open | David Lee Arnoff Trophy | Nevins Trophy | McMillan Cup
STONY BROOK, NY – For the third successive weekend, the Maritime College dinghy sailing team came away with a victory on Oct. 18, winning the Stony Brook Fall Open. That was one of four events in which the Privateers were entered. Maritime's dinghy squad also took fourth place at the David Lee Arnoff Trophy, hosted by Hobart, and was 17
th at the Nevins Trophy, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The offshore team, meanwhile, participated in the McMillan Cup at the U.S. Naval Academy and finished ninth.
The Stony Brook Fall Open came down to a battle between the Privateers and host Seawolves. Entering the final set of three races, Stony Brook had the lead. However, Maritime's "A" crew of
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) and
Riley Gross (Fairfield, CT) posted back-to-back wins in Races 4 & 5 of the six-race series.
Desmond White (Aguada, Puerto Rico) and
Colin Gee (Cary, NC), meanwhile, placed first and third in the fourth and fifth "B" division races, putting the Privateers in front heading into the final race. In Race 6, Stony Brook finished second and third, but Maritime's combined score of 11 (fourth and seventh) was enough to hold off the Seawolves by one point, 41-42. The "A" crews ended up even on 16 points apiece, while the Privateers held a 25-26 edge in the "B" division, which gave Maritime the overall victory.
At the David Lee Arnoff Trophy, the Privateers' "A" team of
Adam Starck (Lakewood, OH) and
Amelia Tebbens (Center Moriches, NY) put together a very consistent 14-race series across Saturday and Sunday. They notched two victories (Races 2 & 9), three second-place results, and one third place. Overall, their score of 68 points was good for second in the division. Maritime's "B" crew of
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and
Brian Lynch (Mattituck, NY) also picked up a win in Race 13. The Privateers posted a total score of 227 points for the regatta.
Maritime sent a third set of sailors to Merchant Marine for the Nevins Trophy on Saturday and Sunday. The Privateers tallied 325 points in the competition. In the "A" boat,
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and
Juliana Sarich's (New York, NY) best result was sixth place in Race 4 of the 12-race series. The "B" crew of
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH) and
Nicholas Cunha (Red Bank, NJ), meanwhile, took fourth in Race 9.
In addition, the offshore squad traveled to Navy for its final event of the Fall season—the McMillan Cup. Maritime started the regatta with a sixth-place finish and tallied 50 total points across six races.
Madeline Ammatuna (Coventry, RI) served as the Privateers' skipper, and she was joined in the boat by
Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT),
Louis Kirk (New Rochelle, NY),
Joseph Herrick (Bay Shore, NY),
RJ Calanese (Huntington, NY),
Zalachi Robinson (Bronx, NY),
Sebastien Lemaire (Moorestown, NJ),
Cecelia DeMallie (Naples, NY) and
Joseph Little (Parkersburg, IA).
Competing in four events at four different locations would not have been possible without the support of the campus community and sailing alumni. Pam Trowbridge and Rob Crafta organized the travel to Stony Brook, while Herny Millette and
Tyler Mendes were on hand at the Nevins Trophy. Jane Pimentel went with the team to the McMillan Cup, where the Adams family provided housing.
Next weekend will feature only two events. Maritime will return to Merchant Marine for the KP Dinghy Invitational, and another group heads to Washington College in Maryland for the Luce Trophy.
