CHESTERTOWN, MD – The Maritime College dinghy sailing team finished first overall at the Luce Trophy from Washington College on Oct. 24, its fourth consecutive weekend winning a regatta. The Privateers have now been victorious in five events and placed second at another during the Fall Season. Maritime was also scheduled to compete at the Kings Point Dinghy Invitational, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, but that regatta was called off after one race due to a lack of wind.
Wind was also an issue at the Luce Trophy, as only six races in each division were able to be completed on Saturday. There was no wind at all on Sunday, so the standings after Saturday's races became the final results.
As a team, the Privateers finished with 38 total points, 12 clear of second-place Penn State. That difference was entirely attributable to the "B" crew of
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and
Juliana Sarich (New York, NY), who won their fleet with 12 total points to the Nittany Lions' 24 after the "A" boats tied with 26 points apiece. Maritime's "A" team consisted of
Adam Starck (Lakewood, OH) and
Amelia Tebbens (Center Moriches, NY).
Hartwell and Sarich placed fourth in the first race, then earned victories in the next two. Starck and Tebbens also finished first in Race 3, giving Maritime one of just two double wins across the entire regatta. That moved the Privateers into the overall lead, and they would not relinquish it. Penn State pulled even after Race 5 in the "A" fleet, but Hartwell and Sarich capped their series with a second-place showing in Race 5 and a third triumph in Race 6, securing the regatta win for Maritime.
With the victory, the Privateers clinched a spot in this weekend's War Memorial, the Fall coed championship event, which will be held at the U.S. Naval Academy. The MAISA Fall Women's Championships are also this weekend. Maritime returns to that competition, which is being hosted by William Smith College, after not participating in 2025.
