Results: Princeton Fall Open | Hewitt Trophy | Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta
PRINCETON, NJ – The Maritime College sailing team traveled to Princeton for the second straight weekend on Oct. 10. And, for the second straight weekend, the Privateers returned home with the trophy. One week after winning the Tiger Women's Open, the Maritime coed dinghy squad earned the victory at the Princeton Fall Open in dominant fashion.
There were 10 total races sailed at the regatta, five in each division. The Privateers placed first in eight of them. In the other two (the first two "B" division races), Maritime was second.
Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY) and
Amelia Tebbens (Center Moriches, NY) had an undefeated record in the "A" boat.
Desmond White (Aguada, Puerto Rico) and
Bogdan Bogurskiy (Staten Island, NY), meanwhile, finished the regatta with three victories after starting with two second-place results. Overall, the Privateers tallied just 12 total points overall, fewer than any other team had in either division alone.
Maritime also sent a contingent to Bowdoin for the Hewitt Trophy. The Privateers ended up 12
th in that very hotly-contested event, finishing with 290 points. Maritime was just 10 points out of a Top 10 placement. The "A" crew of
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and
RJ Calanese (Huntington, NY) earned a victory in the second of 14 races across Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10-11. Calanese also sailed with
Nikita Troast (Brooklyn, NY) in six races. In the "B" boat, meanwhile,
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) teamed with
Brian Lynch (Mattituck, NY) for the entire regatta. Their best result was fourth place in Race 11.
In addition, the offshore squad finally got its first opportunity to compete after having its first regatta cancelled due to the nor'easter. The Privateers participated in the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta at the Larchmont Yacht Club on Oct. 10-11 and placed sixth as a team. Maritime's crew of skipper
Sebastien Lemaire (Moorestown, NJ),
Madeline Ammatuna (Coventry, RI),
Joseph Little (Parkersburg, IA),
Robert Wieczorek III (Greenport, NY),
Joseph Mayurnick (Scranton, PA) and
Louis Kirk (New Rochelle, NY) sailed the J/109 boat "3 Cheers." Across seven races, they had one fourth-place finish (Race 1) and one third-place result (Race 5).
Thanks to Assistant Men's Basketball Coach Jaylin Gray for accompanying the group to Princeton. Bob Wieczorek, Jr., meanwhile, traveled with the offshore team this weekend.
Another busy weekend is in store for the Privateers on Oct. 17-18, with the team scheduled to compete in four different events. Maritime is entered in three different dinghy regattas—the David Lee Arnoff Trophy, hosted by Hobart, the Stony Brook Fall Open, and the Nevins Trophy at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The offshore squad will also be in action at the McMillan Cup from the U.S. Naval Academy.
