THROGGS NECK, NY – Two members of the Maritime College baseball team have been recognized by the Skyline Conference. Sophomore
Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) was chosen as the Skyline Player of the Week, while junior
Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) earned Skyline Pitcher of the Week honors.
Weber tied the single-game program records for home runs (3) and RBIs (7) in Game 1 of a doubleheader sweep against Manhattanville on Saturday. He hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first before crushing a two-run shot in the third and a grand slam in the fifth. Weber crushed another long ball and added a double in the second game of the twinbill. He then went a combined 4-for-10 in the Privateers' two victories at Purchase on Sunday. Weber also had an RBI triple in the loss at Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday. He finished with a .455 batting average (10-for-22) and 1.182 slugging percentage across the five contests.
Sorge recorded two wins on back-to-back days against Manhattanville and Purchase. After picking up the victory with two innings of relief in the second game against Manhattanville on Saturday, Sorge made the start in Game 2 at Purchase on Sunday and went seven innings. He allowed just one run on five hits and struck out six without issuing a walk in the 7-2 win. Sorge also went three innings at Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday, notching three strikeouts. In 12 total innings over the three games, he posted a 2.25 ERA and recorded 10 strikeouts while only walking two.
They become the fourth and fifth different Privateers to receive Skyline weekly awards this season.
Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) was the Co-Player of the Week on April 1, and
Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) took home Pitcher of the Week honors on March 11.
David Granucci (Medford, NY), meanwhile, earned a Rookie of the Week nod on March 11.
