CHESTERTOWN, MD – The Maritime College sailing team sent two different squads to Maryland for a pair of events on April 12-13. One crew went to Washington College for The Grant, while the Privateers also took part in the Own Trophy at St. Mary's MD.
At The Grant, Maritime tallied 144 points, which was good for fifth place overall in the 16-team field. The Privateer duo of
Nathaniel Hartwell (Daphne, AL) and
Tyler Mendes (Eastchester, NY) nearly won the "A" division. They finished with 56 points, but ended up second behind Columbia on a tiebreaker. Each boat had two first-place results, with Maritime winning Races 7 & 10, while the Lions earning the victory in Races 3 & 6. However, Columbia had two second-place finishes to the Privateers' one, giving them the top spot. Hartwell & Mendes also recorded two third-place showings in their FJ.
Maritime's "B" team consisted of
Nicole Ostapowicz (Amityville, NY) and
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY). They took seventh in the division with 88 points. Ostapowicz & Saharov's best result was third place in Race 8.
Meanwhile, at the Owen Trophy, the Privateers recorded 520 points to place eighth.
Jeremy Lunati (Stony Brook, NY) and
Grace Wilson (Lexington Park, MD) sailed in the "A" boat, while the "B" team was skipped by
Luke Barker (Rocky River, OH). He was joined by
Andrew McCarthy (Hamden, CT) for 14 races and
Ash Clements (Garland, TX) in the other four. Maritime had two ninth-place efforts in the "A" division, with the "B" boat taking ninth in Race 15 with its 420.
With their sixth-place showing at The Grant, the Privateers qualified for a number of regattas in the Fall, as well as next weekend's America Trophy. That competition will be hosted by Cornell University on April 19-20.
