THROGGS NECK, NY – After defeating rival Merchant Marine for the first time since 2017 on Saturday, the Maritime College football team has been recognized with all three New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly awards.
Will Pickett (Rockville Centre, NY) was chosen as the NEWMAC Offensive Athlete of the Week, while
Ryan Costales (Brewster, NY) earned NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week honors and
Owen Cunningham (Mineola, NY) was named NEWMAC Special Teams Athlete of the Week.
Pickett was responsible for all five touchdowns in the Privateers' 34-14 victory. He passed for three scores and ran for two others, as Maritime found the end zone on five consecutive drives. Pickett tallied 343 yards of total offense in the game, going 12-for-18 for 181 yards in the air and gaining 162 rushing yards on 21 carries. He broke free for a 53-yard TD run early in the third quarter that put the Privateers in front for good. Pickett also had a 63-yard touchdown pass for Maritime's first score of the game.
Costales finished with five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. With the Privateers trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, his sack on 3
rd-and-9 knocked the Mariners out of field goal range and forced a punt. Maritime scored its first touchdown on the ensuing possession. Immediately after the Privateers took the lead early in the third quarter, Costales forced a fumble on Merchant Marine's first play from scrimmage, setting up another TD drive that increased Maritime's advantage to 28-14.
Cunningham had five kickoffs for 154 yards, an average of 30.8 yards per kick, that gave the Mariners an average starting field position of their own 40. His only punt of the contest came on the Privateers' first possession and went for 36 yards.
Their selections give Maritime a total of four NEWMAC weekly honors this season.
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) was the NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week on Sept. 15 after the shutout win over Anderson.
The Privateers (3-3, 1-2 NEWMAC) return to Reinhart Field for the annual Homecoming game against Norwich (1-4, 0-2 NEWMAC) at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
