THROGGS NECK, NY – For the second straight year, the Maritime College football team was rewarded for its regular season performance by hosting a bowl game. The Privateers welcomed Hobart to Reinhart Field on Saturday for the ECAC James Lynah Bowl. Behind 172 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Most Valuable Player E.J. Taylor, the Statesmen (6-5) came away with a 42-14 win over Maritime (5-6).
Hobart received the opening kickoff and drove 66 yards in six plays for the game's first score, an 11-yard run by Tru Styles. The Statesmen increased their lead to 14-0 when Taylor found paydirt from 10 yards out early in the second quarter. After the Privateers were stopped on 4
th-and-4, a
Nazir Kinsey (Syracuse, NY) interception immediately gave the ball back to Maritime. The Privateers then marched 67 yards in 13 plays, with
Will Pickett's (Rockville Centre, NY) 1-yard TD rush capping the drive and bringing Maritime within 14-7. Hobart responded with a 38-yard touchdown pass from Jeremy Weiss to Marcus Peterson that made it 21-7 at halftime.
After forcing a three-and-out on the Privateers' first possession of the second half, the Statesmen got into the end zone on each of their next two drives to increase their lead to 35-7. Weiss then connected with Johnny Harding on the first play of the fourth quarter to give Hobart a 42-7 advantage.
Maritime closed out the scoring with 12 seconds left in the contest, when Pickett hit
Nate Casaburi (Sayville, NY) for a 19-yard TD strike. It was Casaburi's 10
th touchdown catch of the season and the 21
st of his career, tying the program record.
Pickett finished 20-for-35 passing for 215 yards and one touchdown. He also had one TD on the ground.
Joshua Rogers (Valley Stream, NY) led the Privateers with 51 rushing yards on 22 carries. Casaburi, meanwhile, tallied nine receptions for 123 yards. His 75 catches this season were a school record.
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) paced the Maritime defense with 13 tackles, including the Privateers' only sack, and forced a fumble.
As a team, Hobart gained 472 yards of total offense. Weiss went 8-for-13 through the air for 186 yards and three touchdowns. Harding caught two TD passes for 53 yards, while Tristan Reynolds notched 77 yards on two receptions. Defensively, Trey Dillabough and Noah Chachere notched nine tackles apiece, and Mike McGhee added eight tackles for the Statesmen.
This marked Maritime's seventh postseason appearance and fourth time playing in an ECAC bowl game. The Privateers went to an ECAC bowl three years in a row from 2016-18 before reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2019.
