DALLAS, PA – On Saturday, the Maritime College men's and women's cross country teams began the 2024 campaign by competing in the Misericordia Cougar Classic. The Privateer women took fourth place in the team standings, while the men's squad finished fifth overall.
Maritime's top five women all crossed the line within 2:25 of each other.
Aisling Donnelly (New City, NY) ran 6000 meters in 29:37.8 to place 13
th, while
Nicole Mejia's (Garden City, NY) 30:33.2 clocking was good for 14
th.
Hannah Smith (Las Vegas, NV) ended up 16
th in 31:23.9.
Mary Cirelli (Oreland, PA) and
Livia Malmsten (Kullavik, Sweden) were separated by just three seconds. Cirelli finished 20
th in 32:49.0, followed by the 21
st-place Malmsten in 32:52.3.
The Privateers posted a team score of 84 points. Host Misericorida had nine of the top 10 finishers, including the top eight, to win the team title with a perfect score of 15 points.
Michael Abbamonte (Bohemia, NY) was the top finisher for the Maritime men. He completed the 8000-meter course in 32:27.9 to capture 22
nd place.
C.J. Elwell (Charlestown, RI) placed 24
th in 33:21.4, and
Jack Queen (Mamaroneck, NY) took 25
th place in his collegiate debut after posting a time of 35:41.7.
Joseph Ferrante (Massapequa, NY) (28
th, 37:06.8) and
Benjamin Spellman (Hampton Bays, NY) (29
th, 37:41.4) rounded out the Privateers' top five.
With 128 points, Maritime was fifth in the team standings. Misericordia also won the men's event, notching a total score of 23 points.
Next Saturday, the Privateers return to Pennsylvania for the Penn State Abington Invitational. The first race is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m.
