WASHINGTON, DC – After a four-month winter break, the Maritime College sailing team resumed its 2023-24 season at the DC Team Race, hosted by George Washington University, on March 2-3. The rainy, windy conditions were perfect for sailing on Saturday, while Sunday's scheduled races were cancelled due to lack of wind.
The regatta was a team racing event, which involved a series of head-to-head matchups against each opponent. Six boats contested each race, three from each team. Maritime ended up fifth overall, dropping all eight of its races (two against every other team).
Spencer Barnes (Rocky River, OH) and
Eva Leggett (Brookhaven, NY) were the Privateers' No. 1 pairing throughout the weekend. They sailed together in every race, competing in both the FJ and Z420.
Ben Hosford (Fairport, NY) and
Nicholas Cunha (Red Bank, NJ) were paired in six of the eight races, with Cunha teaming with
Brooks Turcotte (Chautauqua, NY) in the other two. Turcotte also raced with
Kaitlyn Scarcella (Staten Island, NY) and
Nicholas Ault (Syracuse, NY).
Marcus Adam (Severna Park, MD), meanwhile, joined Scarcella in four races.
Next weekend, Maritime will travel to a pair of regattas. The Privateers will return to Maryland for the St. Mary's College Team Race, while a group of sailors will also compete at the Tiger 2v2 Team Race, hosted by Princeton University.
