THROGGS NECK, NY – After his record-tying performance in the Maritime College football team's 55-30 win at Coast Guard on Saturday, senior quarterback
Steven Stassi (East Islip, NY) has been honored as the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Offensive Athlete of the Week. He threw for five touchdowns while leading the Privateers into the end zone on each of their first eight drives.
Stassi finished 28-for-35 for 332 yards, and his five TD passes tied the program record. He didn't throw an interception and added 12 rushing yards on five carries. Stassi had scoring completions of 26, 8, 6, 11 and 57 yards to three different receivers, as Maritime tallied its most points in a game since 2018.
It was his second five-touchdown, zero-interception performance of the season. Stassi also achieved the feat against Anna Maria on Sept. 21. The five passing TDs equaled the school mark originally set by current Assistant Coach
Tom Wright on Sept. 7, 2018.
He becomes the third Privateer to receive a NEWMAC weekly award this season.
Nate Casaburi (Sayville, NY) was the Offensive Athlete of the Week on Sept. 23, while
Dylan Denicker (Queens, NY) earned a Defensive Athlete of the Week nod on Nov. 4. This is Stassi's first career conference weekly honor.
Maritime (7-2, 5-1 NEWMAC) will host 20
th-ranked Springfield (9-0, 6-0 NEWMAC) at 12 p.m. on Saturday with an NCAA Tournament berth on the line. The winner will receive the NEWMAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the loser is guaranteed a spot in the Fusion Bowl opposite the second-place team in the Conference of New England.
