MONTGOMERY, NY – The Maritime College men's and women's cross country teams began the 2022 season on Saturday morning at the Jasper Invitational. Competing against a field that included Division I, II and III opposition, the Privateer men finished seventh overall and first among Division III institutions. The Maritime women, meanwhile, were sixth overall and first among Division III teams at the Twin Ponds at the Farm.
In the men's race, Maritime was led by
Jack Lehnhardt (Dunkirk, MD), who completed the 8000-meter course in 27:57.6 to place 28
th.
Jake Mundok (Lewes, DE) was the next Privateer across the line. He took 33
rd in 28:43.4. It was a blanket finish for Maritime's next four runners.
William Bischofberger (Huntington, NY) was 45
th in 31:15.7, and he was followed by
Jonah Yonks (Mount Sinai, NY) (46
th, 31:16.7),
Dean Butkiewicz (Middle Village, NY) (47
th, 31:16.7) and
David Anderson (Minerva, NY) (48
th, 31:18.3).
Declan O'Connor (Westfield, NJ) rounded out the Privateers' top seven with a 51
st-place showing (31:45.7).
As a unit, Maritime tallied 199 points, which was good for seventh out of 11 scoring teams. Each of the top four teams (Monmouth, Rider, Fordham, Manhattan) were Division I squads. There were three Division III schools in the race, with Maritime beating both Hunter and Kean in the team standings.
On the women's side,
Adelle Leger (Middletown, NY) was the Privateers' top finisher. She took 33
rd overall after running 6000 meters in 27:05.2.
Rachel Zareva (Allen, TX) placed 35
th in 27:13.3, while
Rebecca Zareva (Allen, TX) came in right behind her sister in 36
th place (27:17.7).
Aisling Donnelly (New City, NY) posted a time of 30:22.0, which was good for 41
st place, and
Mary Cirelli (Oreland, PA) came across in 44
th place with a 31:15.1 clocking. Completing Maritime's top seven were
Caravel Losch (Butler, PA) (45
th, 31:48.3) and
Tori Gay (Whiteford, MD) (50
th, 36:06.1).
Maritime collected 189 points in the team standings to easily finish ahead of Kean, the only other full Division III squad on the women's side. Overall, the Privateers were sixth out of eight teams, with Division I opponents Monmouth, Rider, Fordham and Manhattan claiming the top four places.
Next Saturday, the Privateers travel to the Penn State Abington Invitational. The first race gets underway at 9 a.m.
