NORFOLK, VA – It was championship weekend for both the Maritime College coed and women's sailing teams on Oct. 30-31. And the Privateer coed squad capped a very successful fall season by taking second place overall at the War Memorial Regatta, hosted by Old Dominion University. Maritime also placed 10
th at the MAISA Fall Women's Regatta, which was held at William Smith College in Geneva, NY.
Maritime's top duo of
Benton Amthor (Yorktown, VA) and
Eva Leggett (Brookhaven, NY) had a very consistent weekend at the War Memorial, winning the A division with a score of 58 points. They finished third or better in eight of the 12 races and only twice ended up outside the top 10. Amthor and Leggett raced their FJ to consecutive victories in races four and five.
Nick Chisari (Locust Valley, NY) and
Mark Modzelewski (Hollywood, FL) also earned a pair of victories in the B boat. Both of their wins came on day two, in races eight and 11. That was part of a four-race string where Maritime also put up a second and a third. Modzelewski sailed all 12 races in the event, while Chisari split time with
Spencer Barnes (Rocky River, OH) on Saturday before competing all day Sunday.
The B team tallied 91 points, giving Maritime 149 total for the regatta. The Privateers finished one point ahead of Hobart & William Smith for second place and just three points in front of fourth-place St. Mary's. George Washington was the overall champions.
Meanwhile, at the MAISA Fall Women's Regatta, the Privateers placed 10
th overall with 166 points. Maritime was ninth in a very competitive A division and 10
th in the B division. Only 10 races were held because of the wind conditions.
Clare Guarascio (Massapequa, NY) and
Kaitlin Brzostek (Islip Terrace, NY) showed remarkable consistency in the A boat. They sailed their 420 to third place in the opening race of the series and didn't have a single finish lower than 11
th. Guarascio and Brzostek finished with the same score as Georgetown—79 points—but lost the tiebreaker and ended up ninth.
In the B division, Maritime was represented by skipper
Morgan Essex (Kirkwood, PA), with
Nicole Schafer (Northport, NY) joining her for six races and
Rebecca Runyan (Mastic, NY) in the other four. The Privateers tallied 88 points, which was good for 10
th in the standings after 10 races.
"This weekend's success was a great way to cap off an excellent dinghy sailing season," Head Coach
Zach Runci said. "The team worked hard to get to this point, and, with three podium finishes in each of the last three events, it was one of the best seasons the team has had in recent memory.
While this was the final weekend for the dinghy sailors, the fall season isn't completely over. Maritime's offshore team will conclude its fall schedule at the Kennedy Cup on Nov. 6-7.
