NORFOLK, VA –
The Maritime College sailing team took part in the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship (ACC) preliminaries last weekend (Oct. 2-3) at Old Dominion University.  The Privateers had their best showing in recent years at the event, a 12th-place finish in the overall standings.

Competing with the FJ, Maritime's A boat of skipper Clare Guarascio (Massapequa, NY) and crew Eva Leggett (Brookhaven, NY) placed 10th or better in seven of the 17 races, including a win in race 15.  They were also second in race 14 and third in race four.

Gurascio and Leggett earned 169 points.  Meanwhile, skipper Marleigh Henehan (San Diego, CA) and crew Rebecca Runyan (Mastic, NY) added 202 points in the B division.  They finished second in the final race to give Maritime a total score of 371 points and put the Privateers just ahead of Northeastern (375) in the overall standings.

"I am very proud of how the team sailed this weekend, and I'm particularly excited about seeing all of Clara's hard work throughout her career pay off," Head Coach Zach Runci said.  "I'm excited to see what the team is able to accomplish down the stretch this season."

Fall competition continues through the weekend of Nov. 6-7 before resuming with the championship portion of the season in the spring.
