ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Maritime College men's lacrosse team picked up its third win of the season with a dominant second half as they took out the Oneonta, 19-9 on the road Wednesday afternoon. The victory improved the Privateers to 3-1 overall, while the Red Dragons fell to 1-1.
Oneonta wasted no time jumping out in front as they netted the first three goals of the game within the first seven minutes. The Privateers responded with two goals from junior midfielder
Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) at 6:11 and 4:50 and headed to the second quarter trailing 3-2.
Maritime continued their comeback with a goal from
reigning Skyline Conference Offensive Player of the Week,
Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), with 8:01 to play in the first half. After letting up two goals for the Red Dragons, and finding themselves down 5-3 with under seven minutes to go in the 2nd, the Privateers finished the half with goals by
Ciaran McEnroe (Pearl River, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)),
Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), and two from
Collin Flannery (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), including one with just 16 ticks left on the clock. Maritime headed to the break up 7-6 to regain control of the game.
Connell picked up where the Privateers left off to start the second half with a goal 52 seconds in to bring the lead up to 8-6, and then Connell assisted DeMeo a few minutes later while a man-up to extend the lead, 9-6. Maritime went on to dominate the third quarter of play and win the quarter by a margin of 6-2. Flannery and DeMeo would score the final four goals of the period to bring the score to 13-8 heading into the final period of play.
The Maritime offense continued to roll in the fourth quarter as they tacked on six more goals, including two from
Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side), and one from
Noah Kelvas (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) while a man-up.
DeMeo continued his impressive start to the season with a team-highs six goals and an assist, while Flannery finished with five goals.
Kevin Buser (Babylon, NY/) picked up an impressive 20 out of 32 face-offs, and McEnroe filled up the box score with a goal, an assist, and a team-high five ground balls.
Kyle Bockelman (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) was steady in frame again, notching ten saves for the game.
Maritime won't return to action until Wednesday March 11, as they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to face Vassar. The game is expected to start at 6:00 PM.
