POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Maritime College men's lacrosse team couldn't pick up the win they were looking on the road at Vassar College on Wednesday night as they fell to the Brewers 18-7.
The Privateers got off to a hot start in the non-conference contest as they won the first three face-offs and scored on all three possessions without letting Vassar touch the ball.
Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) assisted on all three goals as he found
Collin Flannery (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) 43 seconds into the game to take a quick 1-0 lead. After
Kevin Buser (Babylon, NY/) took the next face-off, Connell looked to two-time reigning Skyline Conference Offensive Player of the Week
Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) who scored the teams second goal 37 seconds later. The early offensive onslaught for Maritime ended with another Connell to Flannery connection as they led 3-0 with 12 minutes left in the first half.
Unfortunately, Maritime couldn't hold the lead and they ended up entering the second quarter down a goal. The quarter saw more improved defense from the Brewers as they limited the Privateers offense to just one DeMeo goal and they were able to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.
The second half continued to be controlled by Vassar as they went on to hold Maritime's stout offense to just three goals. Connell assisted on two of the three with DeMeo and
Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) on the receiving end.
Buser finished the game 18-28 on face-offs and Connell led the offense with five points and five assists. DeMeo finished with a team-high four goals while Buser also tallied a team-high seven ground balls.
The Privateers will look to get back on track this Saturday as they host SUNY Geneseo at 12 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
