THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College swimming and diving teams hosted a tri-meet against Mount Saint Mary and the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The meet marked the final tune-up for the Privateers before the Skyline Conference Championships on January 25 and 26. On the women's side, Maritime lost to Mount Saint Mary 125-71 and 167-47 to USMMA.
The team of
Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams),
Bethany Champlin (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Vincent),
Bridget Stack (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle), and
Samantha Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) opened up the meet with a time of 2:20.43 in the 200-yard medley relay. On the men's side
Caelan Troy (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park),
Ian Folan (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame),
Stephen Roe (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township), and
Brenner Hinds (Bay Head, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) placed second with 1:46.09. Later in the meet,
Anna Curran (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and Olivia Grabber placed fifth and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle, while Edwin Moriarty placed third at 1:59.24.
In the 50-yard freestyle,
Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) put up a great showing at 28.62 and a third-place finish. Hinds then placed second at 23.12 in the men's race.
Samantha Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) kept the momentum going in the sprints as she finished third in the 50-yard butterfly at 31.95, while Roe and Folan placed third and fourth on the men's side. In the one-meter diving,
Macy Blakeley (Falls Church, Va./George C. Marshall) and
Alexandra Gula (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) put up scores of 149.05 and 104.05, respectively.
Joseph Montano (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) and Matthew Daghir scored 158.10 and 143.90.
Maeve Lavery (Bronx, NY/St. Ferry) put up a time of 6:08.71 in the 500-yard freestyle and finished third, while Moriarty also earned the third spot at 5:19.17. In the 100-yard freestyle,
Tommy Murray (Paramus, N.J./Bergen Catholic) finished third with a time of 54.74.Â
Closing out the tri-meet, the team of Thompson, Champlin, Lavery, and
Hannah Mesones (Spring Valley, NY/Ramapo)Â finished fourth with a time of 2:00.12. On the men's side, Hinds,
Seth Champlin (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), Troy, and Roe placed second with a time of 1:33.02. The final race of the meet was the 1650-yard freestyle, where
Brendan Raffay (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley) and
Malachi Melli (Bridgewater, NJ/Somerset County VoTech) finished with times of 21:03.80 and 21:07.76.
