The Maritime College men's basketball team couldn't pull off the upset Thursday night against the defending Skyline Conference Champions, Yeshiva University, as they fell by a score of 104-60.
The Privateers were playing in their 10th game in the last 21 days and couldn't get off to the hot start they needed against the top team in the Skyline.
Michael Walker (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) got the offense going early on by scoring the first eight points for Maritime, but they struggled to stop the high-powered Macabee offense and they were down 20-8 just over five minutes into the game. The efficient opening half continued for Yeshiva as they converted 74.1 percent of their shot attempts to go into the locker room with a 57-20 advantage.
Maritime turned it around in the second frame, as they scored 40 points on 42.3 percent shooting from the field. Despite improvements on the defensive end as well, the Privateers weren't able to close the gap on Yeshiva's lead and they were able to pull away with a 104-60 win in Riesenberg Hall.
Walker led Maritime on offense with 13 points, while
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem),
Griffin McNally (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman), and
Husene Camara (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglas) added solid contributions off the bench with nine points each. The Privateers outscored the Macabees in bench points 37-26 on the night.
Maritime looks to pick up a conference win on the road Saturday as they travel to Mount Saint Vincent for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
