Week 12 Preview: Maritime at Worcester Polytechnic Institute

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – For the second straight season the Maritime football team will be participating in postseason play, as the Privateers will head on the road to take on the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Engineers at 6 p.m. on Alumni Field in the 2017 New England Bowl Series.
 
Live Coverage: The WPI Sports Information Department will be providing both Live Stats and Live Video Coverage of the contest available at MaritimeAthletics.com/coverage.aspx
 
Parking at WPI: There will be two parking lots available for Maritime spectators, with the closest lot to the field being the Park Avenue Garage and is the primary lot for handicap parking. For Maritime fans looking to tailgate, the Hackfield Lot has been reserved for Maritime tailgaters. Tailgating is not allowed in the parking garage.
 
Driving to WPI: Fans are encouraged to use 1 John Wing Road, Worcester, Mass. as the GPS Address. The address will direct fans to the Park Avenue Garage.
 
Stadium Entry & Tickets: The entrance to Alumni Stadium is located between the Park Avenue Parking Garage and the Stadium. Tickets for both games in the New England Bowl Series may be purchased the day of the game. Prices are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children. Children under the age of six will be admitted free.

Online Store: The only place to get your official New England Bowl Game gear is through Champion's Choice Official Online Store. There will not be any sales at the game.
 
Series History: This is the first-ever meeting between the Privateers and the Engineers. The teams have three common opponents between them as Maritime and WPI have both beaten Anna Maria, Maine Maritime and Merchant Marine this season.

Scouting the Privateers: Maritime ended the regular season at 9-1 overall and had a 6-1 record in ECFC games. The Privateers enter Saturday's game on a five-game winning streak including Saturday's regular season finale against Gallaudet, 54-14.
 
As a team Maritime averaged 434.1 yards of offense per game and scored 40.4 points per game, while allowing 282.8 yards per game and allowing just 18.0 points per game through the team's 10 contests.
 
Maritime had 19 All-Conference selections including five first team honorees, 11 second team all-league selections and three named honorable mention. Maritime's senior kicker Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) was chosen as the Special Teams Player of the Year, while classmate Thomas Korwan (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) earned Offensive Lineman of the Year accolades.
 
In addition to Murphy, who earned both first team honors as both a kicker and a punter, and Korwan, who earned his second-straight first team selection, senior fullback Devin Kenny (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) earned first team honors along with junior wide receiver Brandonn Drumgole (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai).
 
Junior quarterback Thomas Wright (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), senior running back Chris Olberding (Dix Hills, N.Y./Walt Whitman), senior wide receiver Matt Ward (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North), junior wide receiver Curtis Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht), senior h-back Jacob Shinnick (Pleasanton, Calif./Granada), senior offensive lineman Connor McDaniel (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip), defensive lineman Wesley Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood), senior linebacker Kendal Parker (Evans, Ga./Lakeside), sophomore linebacker Liam Bailey (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), and senior defensive backs Nick Conte (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) and Joshua Burris (Folsom, La./Covington/Gavilan) all earned second team accolades.
 
Offensively Wright found all three of his all-conference receivers a total of 113 times, including 59 times to Drumgole, who led the team with seven touchdown receptions, while Ward added six and Smith added four as the trio combined for 1,741 of Wright's 2,311 passing yards. Olberding and Kenny combined for 11 touchdowns on the ground with Olberding getting the bulk of the carries for 720 yards, and Kenny notching 404 yards on the ground.
 
Defensively Parker led the team with 89 tackles and seven sacks, while Bailey was second on the team in tackles with 60 and added two sacks of his own in the middle of the defense. Joseph led Maritime on the defensive line with 38 stops and also dropped the quarterback five times for 40 yards behind the line of scrimmage. Conte was the top defensive back in terms of tackles with 44, while also recording two interceptions and was third on the team with five pass breakups, trailing team-leader Burris, who broke up a team-high 10 passes notched 21 tackles on the year.
 
Murphy was responsible for both kicks and punts in his senior season as he led the team in scoring with 80 points through the first 10 games of the year. Murphy had 11 field goals, including a season-long 48-yard kick against Merchant Marine in mid-September, while adding 47 extra points. He also tallied 1,163 punting yards on 29 punts, and added 4,352 yards on 71 kickoffs.
 
Scouting the Engineers: WPI finished the regular season with an 8-2 overall record and a 6-1 mark in their first season in the NEWMAC, the Engineers enter Saturday's game as winners of six straight including a 42-7 win over Norwich in their season finale.
 
As a team WPI averaged 403.8 yards of offense per game and scored 33.7 points per game, while allowing 272.8 yards per game and allowing just 14.3 points per game through the team's 10 contests.
 
The Engineers had 14 All-Conference selections in the NEWMAC with nine selections on the first team and five selections on the second team. The group was highlighted by junior kicker Spencer Harrington, who earned NEWMAC Special Teams Athlete of the Year honors, and was the only non-Springfield student-athlete or coach to earn an individual award.
 
WPIs first teamers including running back Sean McAllen, wide receiver Corey Coogan, offensive lineman Brendan Harty, return man Austin Pesce, defensive linemen Derek Pacheco and Luca Cerasani, linebacker Sam Malafronte, and defensive back Lou Garcia.
 
McAllen carried the ball 217 times for 1,322 yards and led the team with 14 touchdowns, after receiving his handoffs from Blake Rice. McAllen also caught 21 passes out of the backfield and had a pair of receiving touchdowns. Coogan was Rice's top receiver target with 26 catches for 319 yards and four touchdowns.
 
On the defensive side of the ball Malaronte was amongst the team leaders with 64 tackles and also added two sacks and had a pair of interceptions, while fellow Cerasani had 38 tackles with a team-high six sacks. On the line Pacheco had 44 stops in his senior season to go along with a team high 16.5 tackles for a loss in yardage. Garcia led the team with six interceptions and also added 16 tackles in his final year with the team.
 
Harrington registered 69 points with nine field goals and 42 extra points made as he earned Special Teams Athlete of the Year, which included his season-long 41 yard field goal try against Maine Maritime. Pesce led the return game with 25 punt returns for 298yards and an average of 11.9 yards per punt return.
 
Around the ECFC: Eastern Collegiate Football Conference Champion Husson (9-1) will travel to Springfield (10-0) in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship. This is Husson's third trip to the NCAA Tournament in a four-year span and second in as many years. The game kicks off at 12 p.m. on Springfield's Stagg Field.
