PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Maritime men's swimming team had its Skyline Conference Championship streak come to an end on Saturday as the Privateers took second at this year's league championship meet hosted by Purchase College on both Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
Maritime finished the weekend with 262 points, which was 62 points better than third place Mount St. Mary. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy reclaimed the Skyline Championship with a team score of 773 points. Sarah Lawrence was fourth at 87 points, followed by Old Westbury (41) and Purchase (18).
The opening event for the men saw the Privateers take second in the 200 medley relay, sophomore
Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) opened with a 25.99, followed by classmate
Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) posting a time of 27.83 in the breaststroke lap. Freshman
Stephen Kelleher (Poughquag, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) recorded a 25.94 in the butterfly, while junior
Doug Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) collected a 23.69 in the freestyle to give the Privateers a time of 1:43.45 and also pick up 26 points. Merchant Marine's quartet won the event with a time of 1:36.19.
In the 1,000 freestyle senior
Robert Lewis (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) scored 10 points for the Privateers as he finished fifth overall with a time of 10:58.64, just two seconds off of his career-best time. Kelleher picked up an additional seven points with a time of 11:01.90,while sophomore
Tristan DeYoung (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) posted an eighth place finish to give Maritime five more points with a career-best time of 11:17.87. Junior
Luke Doherty (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) gave Maritime four more points with a time of 11:32.87.
The 200 freestyle saw sophomore
Spencer Blass (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) lead the Privateers as he finished 11th overall with a time of 1:58.62, freshman
Edwin Moriarty (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) was close behind with a 12th place finish as he recorded one point for the Privateers with a time of 1:58.68. DeYoung and Doherty, along with senior
Sam Dratch (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central), and sophomores
Jesse Pierce (Broadway, Va./Broadway),
Christopher Chilelli (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional),
Shane Hoey (Bell Harbor, N.Y./St. Francis Prep), and
Lillo Rubino (Islip Terrace, N.Y./Central Islip) all competed during the event for Maritime.
Moriarty added an additional five points to Maritime's total with a 1:01.70 during the 100 backstroke, Rubino followed with a 1:04.18, followed by junior
Andrew Katz (Greenlawn, N.Y./Glenn-Elwood) with a 1:04.20. Freshman
Adam Durrua (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) and senior
Jonathan Murray (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg) rounded out the scoring positions during the event with a 1:06.20, and a 1:07.07, respectively. Senior
Charles Schnebel (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) was one position outside of scoring with a 1:07.22.
Freshman
Ian Folan (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame) posted a new personal-best with a time of 1:02.27 to collected 12 points in third position for the Privateers in the 100 breaststroke. Wu was fourth with a 1:02.73, while Marino was fifth at 1:02.85 as the pair of sophomores combined for 21 points. Chilelli added one point in 12th position with a time of 1:09.49. Matthew Hart (Bayonne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) and Hoey also vied for scoring positions.
Lewis netted another 10 points for the Privateers with a time of 2:08.28 to set a personal-best during the 200 butterfly. Pierce took 9th place for four points, while Schnebel added three more points in 10th place to round out the scoring for the Privateers in the fly.
The final event of the first night was the 50 freestyle, which saw Marino notch another personal best with a 22.90 as he picked up 11 points. Wu added another four points with a time of 23.27, while Russell and Folan fell just shy of scoring times. Katz, Kelleher, Murray, Dratch, Blass, and Hart all collected times of 25.50 or better.
Through the opening day of the Skyline Conference swimming championships, the Privateers were in second place with 135 points. Merchant Marine led the way with 393 points, with Mount St. Mary rounding out the top-three at 96 points.
The second day began with the 100 freestyle, which saw Wu pace the Privateers with a time of 50.78 as he finished tied for fourth overall. Russell was 10th overall with a 52.24, while Blass nipped his previous career-best time as he recorded a 53.48 but was just outside of scoring position. Seven other Privateers competed of the 49 total during the 100 freestyle.
Moriarty led Maritime in the 200 backstroke as he finished sixth overall with a 2:13.43, Rubino was right behind with a 2:22.49 as the pair added 16 more points to the Privateer total. Folan and Marino posted identical times of 2:21.69 in the 200 breaststroke to split the 19 points. Hart added an additional two points with a time of 2:34.82 in the breaststroke.
In the 500 freestyle, Kelleher added a top-five finish with a time of 5:08.39 as he shaved four seconds off of his career-best time set earlier this season. Russell was ninth with a 5:28.78, followed by DeYoung in 10th with a 5:28.78. The 100 fly was next, with Wu touching the wall at 54.68 to finish third overall. Lewis added a personal-best time of 58.62 in the fly to take 10th place overall. Schnebel, Blass and Pierce were just on the outside of scoring position.
The final individual event of the day was the individual medley, which saw Marino take third with a 2:03.94, Moriarty was ninth with a 2:11.85, followed by Lewis with a 2:12.18 and Kelleher with a 2:12.41.
The last event of the day was the 400 freestyle relay, which saw the Privateers take third place with their quartet of Katz, Blass, Moriarty and Russell as the foursome collected a time of 3:33.31.
Maritime (9-1, 5-1 Skyline) will close out its dual meet schedule next Saturday, when the Privateers visit non-conference New Paltz at 1 p.m. from Elting Pool.
