Week 1 Preview: Football Visits Maine Maritime to Raise Curtain on 2016 Season

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Football team opens the 2016 season on Saturday afternoon, with a 12 p.m. kickoff against the Maine Maritime Mariners from Ritchie Field in Castine, Maine.

Series History: Maritime and Maine Maritime have met just once before, with the matchup coming to open the 2015 season on Reinhart Field. The Privateers opened the year with a convincing 30-0 victory.
 
Season Openers: Maritime is 6-4 all-time in season openers dating back to the 2006 season.
 
Maritime 2015 in Review: The Privateers finished off the 2015 season with a 5-5 overall record, and a 3-4 mark within the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference. The team had 13 ECFC All-Conference selections, and also had five Academic All-Conference honorees. Last season, the Privateers had six weekly award winners throughout the course of the regular season.
 
Maine Maritime 2015 in Review: After falling to the Privateers, Maine Maritime went on to defeat Mass. Maritime in its home opener en route to a 3-6 record a year ago. The Mariners had five All-New England Football Conference selections, and 16 land on the league's All-Academic team. Maine Maritime had three league players of the week in the NEFC during the 2015 campaign.
 
Additions to the Staff: The Privateers welcome three new additions to the staff as Marcus Spearman will coach the inside linebackers, Amauris Lopez will guide the running backs, and Rocky Iannacone will lead the outside linebackers.
 
Captains: Maritime will once again be led by four captains as seniors Kendal Parker (Evans, Ga./Lakeside), Brian Price (New York, N.Y./Wadleigh), and Nick Fischetti (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), as well as junior Thomas Korwan (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) will lead the team on the field. Around the ECFC: On Thursday, Coast Guard blanked Anna Maria by a 34-0 score to open the season, while UMass-Dartmouth visits Mount Ida and Fitchburg State visits Becker in Friday night action. On Saturday, Husson visits Alfred, Castleton hosts Plymouth State, Norwich welcomes RPI, and Gallaudet will play host to Shenandoah.
